Commentary

Right then, that is it from this one-sided ODI where New Zealand gets the better of Pakistan. Next up in the Tri-Nation series is battle between New Zealand and South Africa on 10th February, Monday. That will begin at 10 am IST (4.30 am GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Mitchell Santner, the victorious skipper of New Zealand says that Glenn Phillips' knock gave them momentum and they were probably looking at 280 at that moment. Adds that Pakistan bowled really well in the middle stages. Adds that Phillips' innings was the icing on the cake. Further mentions that there was a little bit of assistance from the wicket and the big wicket of Fakhar Zaman was key. Adds that they stuck together in the first ten overs. Mentions that every game that you play for the country, you want to win. And Karachi will be slightly different, conditions wise. Concludes by saying that they are expecting Pakistan bounce back strongly in the next one.

Mohammad Rizwan, the captain of Pakistan says that they bowled well until Glenn Phillips took the game away with some incredible batting. Adds that they have to pick the right combination if they want to do well. Says that they have a lot of learnings to take and get themselves ready for the Champions Trophy.

Glenn Phillips is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his all-round brilliance. He says that they had a tough little period in the middle and Pakistan bowled well. Adds that they gave themselves a chance and it was very enjoyable in the end. Tells that surprisingly when you give your stumps away to the bowler, they don't hit it. So he gave himself room and hit it. Mentions that he loves his bowling but this hundred was pretty special for him as well. Concludes by saying that he gets his energy by the team culture that has been built into the team.

Presentation Time...

The Kiwis will be thrilled with their bowling display! After a shaky start in the Powerplay, they seized control, with skipper Mitchell Santner leading the charge with three vital scalps. Michael Bracewell backed him up with two, as the spin duo broke the back of Pakistan’s chase in the middle overs. Their fielding was top-notch, with stunning grabs from Glenn Phillips and Bracewell adding to the spectacle. Phillips also chipped in with a wicket, while Matt Henry cleaned up the tail with three of his own, sealing a dominant performance.

Earlier in the game, New Zealand put up a commanding total after opting to bat, led by a scintillating maiden ton from Glenn Phillips, who lit up the innings. Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell anchored with classy half-centuries, while Michael Bracewell’s late fireworks propelled the Kiwis even further. Shaheen Afridi led Pakistan’s attack with three scalps, and Abrar Ahmed chipped in with a couple, but the bowlers lost their grip at the death, conceding far too many runs in the final overs.

Fakhar Zaman was in sublime touch, tearing the Kiwi attack apart and making batting look effortless, but he fought a lone battle. Pakistan’s struggle against spin was evident as they lost their first four wickets to the tweakers, and with pressure mounting, Fakhar fell for a valiant 84. Tayyab Tahir and Salman Agha showed some fight with a steady 50-run stand, but Tahir’s dismissal right after the second drinks break turned the tide. Salman fought hard, but wickets kept tumbling, and the mounting asking rate proved too much for the tail-enders as Pakistan fell short by a big margin.

The Blackcaps have stormed to a dominant victory, dismantling Pakistan in their own fortress - a feat not many achieve! A statement performance to kick off the Tri-Nation Series, showcasing their class and intent. Meanwhile, the hosts are left searching for answers, with the Champions Trophy looming large.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The Kiwis are in a huddle and then they spread out to take their respective field positions. Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam are the two openers for Pakistan. Matt Henry to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Now, with dew likely to play a role under the lights, Pakistan have a chase of 331 ahead of them. Will their batters step up and take them over the line, or does New Zealand have a plan to defend this total? The second innings promises to be an exciting contest - let’s find out how it unfolds!

During the mid-innings break, a special ceremony is taking place on the field. Pakistan cricket legends Inzamam-ul-Haq and Misbah-ul-Haq are being inducted into the PCB Hall of Fame. A proud moment for them and a cherished one for Pakistan cricket fans.

For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi was the standout bowler, picking up three crucial wickets and consistently troubling the Kiwi batters. However, his figures were spoiled at the death overs especially the last over. Abrar Ahmed also chipped in with two wickets, providing key breakthroughs at important moments. But Naseem Shah having an off day and Haris Rauf's injury did not help them and now they have a huge task on their hands.

As the innings progressed, Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell provided the perfect finishing touch with their fifty-run stand in the final overs. After the dismissal of Bracewell, Mitchell Santner helped Phillips push New Zealand to a respectable total of 330/6 on what appears to be a good batting surface. Glenn too got to his third half-century against Pakistan which he later converted to a brilliant ton being unbeaten on 106 off just 74 balls..

However, Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell came together to stabilize the innings with a solid partnership. Kane Williamson played a composed knock, reaching his half-century, but he couldn’t convert it into a bigger score. Meanwhile, Mitchell carried on the momentum, anchoring the innings beautifully with an impressive 81 off 84 balls.

New Zealand finished really strong here! A fantastic ton from Glenn Phillips and he collected 25 runs in the last over to push the Kiwis to a big total here. Opting to bat first, they suffered an early setback when Will Young departed in the very first over. Things didn’t get much better initially as Rachin Ravindra followed soon after, leaving New Zealand in a tricky position.

Drinks! This game is nicely posied at the moment. Fakhar Zaman has led the charge with the bat already notching up a half-century but he needs to make it big now. They have lost Babar Azam, but they have a long batting line up and will be backing themselves if they can keep the wickets in hand. New Zealand will hope that they can get the wicket of Zaman, and then put the pressure on the others as the target is a big one. An exciting phase of cricket awaits us.

The Match officials and the Players walk out in straight lines for the National Anthems. It's the National Anthem of New Zealand first, followed by that of Pakistan.

Tom Latham is up for a quick chat and says that this series is of vital importance and we want to come here and win. They have an eye on the Champions Trophy. Says that to be playing a Tri Nation series here will be of great learning.  Mentions that the 50 over format, there is a lot more than you think, seeing big scores. Realising how much more time there is. Adds that they are looking to find that blueprint and that momentum and play their brand of cricket. Further mentions that they are looking to adapt quickly and hopefully put up good cricket on show, he concluded.

PITCH REPORT - Vernon Philander assesses the pitch as a batting-friendly surface, with an average score of 292, making it a challenging venue for bowlers. However, he notes that the overhead conditions could provide a small window of opportunity early on, as the ball might not come onto the bat as smoothly. He emphasizes that bowling with the new ball will be crucial, advising bowlers to target the stumps. Philander warns that a poor start could be costly, as it's difficult to regain control once the opposition gains momentum.

Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan sees this match as a crucial opportunity to prepare for the Champions Trophy, especially considering a potential semi-final at this venue. He emphasizes the importance of being ready for the conditions they might face later in the tournament. Rizwan confirms Babar Azam will open the innings alongside King, while the bowling attack features Abrar, Naseem, Haris, and Shaheen. He highlights the presence of all-rounders in the middle order and remains confident in chasing, stressing that a win is a win, but preparation remains the primary goal.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner elects to bat first, believing the pitch will remain consistent throughout the game. He acknowledges the team’s poor performance in the previous match and is eager to set a strong total to apply pressure on the opposition. Santner highlights the importance of the tri-series for both teams as they prepare for the Champions Trophy, emphasizing the value of playing in these conditions. He confirms New Zealand's team composition, featuring three pacers and four spinners, with depth in the batting lineup.

Pakistan (Playing XI) - Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Rizwan (C) (WK), Salman Agha, Tayyab Tahir, Khushdil Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Abrar Ahmed.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Rachin Ravindra, Will Young, Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (WK), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (C), Matt Henry, Ben Sears, Will O’Rourke.

TOSS! New Zealand has won the coin flip and elected to have a BAT first!

The atmosphere is electric, the fans are buzzing, and the cricketing world is ready for a cracking start to this Tri-Nation series. Will Pakistan capitalize on home conditions, or will New Zealand’s adaptability give them the edge? Stay tuned as we bring you all the pre-match updates and the Toss very soon!

The Gaddafi Stadium, recently upgraded to enhance the spectator experience and broadcast quality, sets the perfect stage for what promises to be an exciting contest. The pitch is expected to be batting-friendly, offering good bounce and carry, but as the match progresses, the spinners could play a significant role. With the match being a day-night fixture, the dew factor in the evening could make chasing a preferred option.

New Zealand, on the other hand, are a team renowned for their resilience and adaptability. Under the calm and tactical leadership of Mitchell Santner, the Black Caps will be looking to make a statement in subcontinental conditions. While key names may be absent, the Kiwis boast a strong squad featuring the likes of Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, and Kane Williamson, all of whom have ample experience in Asian conditions. The visitors will be eager to start the series with a win and test their adaptability against spin-friendly conditions.

Pakistan, playing at home, will look to make an emphatic start under the leadership of Mohammad Rizwan. The Men in Green have a formidable record on home soil, and with a squad brimming with experience and youthful exuberance, they will be eager to assert their dominance. The likes of Shaheen Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, and Salman Agha, bring a wealth of firepower, while young guns such as Naseem Shah and Mohammad Hasnain could be crucial in shaping the team's approach. The hosts will also be keen to assess their bowling attack, ensuring they have the right combination heading into the Champions Trophy.

Hello and welcome to the opening match of the much-anticipated Tri-Nation ODI series. Tri Nation series were a thing of the past but it's making its grand comeback in this ODI contest. The first match is between Pakistan and New Zealand at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.  With the ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner, this tournament gives both teams a golden opportunity to fine-tune their combinations, test their bench strength, and build momentum ahead of the marquee event.

... MATCH DAY ...

The countdown is on, with less than a fortnight for the much-anticipated Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE. As part of their final preparations, Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa lock horns in this Tri-series, offering them valuable match practice ahead of the marquee event in this part of the world. The series follows a single round-robin format, with the top two teams meeting in the final in Karachi. The opening game of the series sees the hosts, Pakistan, square off against New Zealand at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This clash will serve as a fitting dress rehearsal, as these two sides are set to face off in the Champions Trophy opener. Pakistan have been in formidable ODI form under Mohammad Rizwan’s captaincy, securing series wins in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Saim Ayub had been instrumental at the top of the order, but an ankle injury sustained during the Test series in South Africa has ruled him out. This opens the door for the return of the explosive Fakhar Zaman to the ODI setup. Saud Shakeel also returns, having last featured in the 2023 World Cup in India, while the core batting lineup remains intact with Babar Azam, Rizwan, and Kamran Ghulam. The all-rounder department sees the comebacks of Faheem Ashraf and Khushdil Shah, both of whom recently impressed in the Bangladesh Premier League. Pakistan’s pace battery remains as potent as ever, boasting the firepower of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, and Mohammad Hasnain. Opting for just one specialist spinner in Abrar Ahmed is a gamble that could backfire for the home side. While they do have all-rounders who can chip in with spin, the lack of a second frontline option might leave them vulnerable. As for New Zealand, they also underwent a captaincy change in 2024, with Mitchell Santner taking the reins. Their results under his leadership have been mixed, having lost an ODI series in Sri Lanka before bouncing back to defeat them at home. Their batting lineup remains largely unchanged, with Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, Rachin Ravindra, and Devon Conway forming the core. However, Conway's availability for the opening game is in doubt, as he may not arrive in time from South Africa after finishing his SA20 commitments. Similarly, Lockie Ferguson's participation is uncertain due to his ongoing commitments in the ILT20, leading to the call-up of Jacob Duffy as cover. On the all-rounder front, New Zealand have plenty of options, with Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Nathan Smith, and Michael Bracewell providing valuable depth across departments. The pace attack will be led by Matt Henry, with Will O’Rourke and Ben Sears providing the additional seam bowling options at Santner's disposal. With both teams fine-tuning their preparations, which side do you think will adapt better and come out on top in this crucial opening game?
