Mushfiqur Rahim

Mushfiqur Rahim is one of Bangladesh’s most accomplished cricketers, known for his resilience, leadership, and exceptional wicketkeeping skills. At just 16 years old, he made history as one of the youngest Test debutants, selected as an understudy to then-wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud for the 2005 England tour. Although he made his debut as a specialist batter, his first match was forgettable, and an ankle injury ruled him out of the second Test.

His leadership potential became evident when he captained Bangladesh in the 2006 Under-19 World Cup, earning another call-up to the Test side. However, he struggled against Muttiah Muralitharan’s spin and was dropped again. In 2006, he made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe. Despite scoring just one half-century before the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, selectors backed him, and he played a crucial role in Bangladesh’s shocking win over India, scoring 56 runs. A year later, he returned to Test cricket, scoring a gritty 80 against Sri Lanka.

In 2010, Mushfiqur scored his maiden Test century against India, solidifying his place in the team. He frequently served as vice-captain before being appointed as Bangladesh’s captain in 2011, following Shakib Al Hasan’s sacking after a disappointing tour of Zimbabwe. His captaincy tenure began with a Man-of-the-Match performance in his first game, scoring 41 off 26 balls to help Bangladesh defeat West Indies in a T20I. Although Bangladesh lost the ODI series, Mushfiqur emerged as their top scorer. Under his leadership, Bangladesh reached the final of the 2012 Asia Cup for the first time, defeating India and Sri Lanka before narrowly losing to Pakistan.

On March 11, 2013, during the first Test against Sri Lanka, Mushfiqur became the first Bangladeshi to score a Test double century. Despite briefly resigning as captain in May 2013, he later retracted his decision, and the BCB confirmed him as captain until the end of the year. In the 2014 Asia Cup, he scored his second ODI century against India despite battling a finger injury. Later that year, Mashrafe Mortaza replaced him as ODI captain, but Mushfiqur remained Test captain. In November 2014, under his leadership, Bangladesh whitewashed Zimbabwe in Tests and ODIs, with Mushfiqur winning the Man of the Series award in ODIs.

During the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Bangladesh stunned England in the group stage to qualify for their first-ever quarterfinal. In that match, Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah Riyad stitched together Bangladesh’s highest ODI partnership of 141 runs. His career hit a frightening moment in January 2017, when he was struck on the helmet while batting against New Zealand and had to be rushed to the hospital. However, he made a strong comeback. In March 2017, he became the first Bangladeshi wicketkeeper to record 100 dismissals in Tests. Later that year, he became the first Bangladeshi batter to score an international century against South Africa.

In November 2018, he scored 219 against Zimbabwe*, making him the first wicketkeeper-batter to score two double centuries in Test cricket. Against West Indies, he became the second Bangladeshi to surpass 4,000 Test runs. Mushfiqur was instrumental in Bangladesh’s 2019 Cricket World Cup campaign, scoring his maiden World Cup century against Australia.

In May 2021, he scored 125 against Sri Lanka, helping Bangladesh win their first-ever ODI series against Sri Lanka. This also made him the first Bangladeshi player to win 150 international matches. He was named Man of the Series, finishing as the top scorer with 237 runs.

At the domestic level, Mushfiqur has represented Rajshahi Division in first-class cricket, accumulating over 6,500 runs, including 34 centuries and 12 half-centuries. In T20 cricket, he has played for various franchises, including Duronto Rajshahi, Sylhet Royals, Chittagong Vikings, Karachi Kings, Barishal Bulls, Rajshahi Kings, Nangarhar Leopards, Khulna Tigers, and Beximco Dhaka. In March 2023, he became only the third Bangladeshi cricketer to score 7,000 ODI runs.

From being one of the youngest debutants in cricket history to becoming one of Bangladesh’s most successful wicketkeeper-batter, Mushfiqur Rahim’s career has been defined by resilience, leadership, and record-breaking achievements.
