Commentary

Right then, the group stage of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy has concluded, and the tournament now moves into the high-stakes knockout phase. Four teams have bowed out, leaving India, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia in the hunt for the title. Interestingly, these are the same four teams that made it to the semifinals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. The first semifinal will take place on Tuesday, 4th March, at the Dubai International Stadium, where India will face Australia. The second semifinal is scheduled for Wednesday, 5th March, at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, featuring New Zealand against South Africa. Both matches will begin at 2.30 pm IST (9 am GMT). As always, join us early for all the pre-match excitement and build-up to these encounters. Until then, take care and goodbye!

The skipper of India, Rohit Sharma says that it was important to finish on a high. Adds that New Zealand have been playing some good cricket in recent years and they needed this result. Mentions that after losing three wickets in the first Powerplay, they needed a couple of partnerships and Iyer and Axar provided them with that while Hardik also did well. Says that they thought that it was a total they could work with as they have a lot of quality in their bowling attack. Further adds that there is no doubt that Varun has something different in him and it is a nice headache to have ahead of the next game. Tells that it is good that they are not making the same mistakes and learning from them with each game and that is exactly what you need to do in this format. Says that Australia have a rich history in ICC tournaments but it is about how they approach that game and hopefully get the better of them to make it to the final.

The captain of New Zealand, Mitchell Santner acknowledges that they expected the wicket to be on the slower side but hadn’t encountered such conditions earlier in the tournament. He credits India for batting well in the middle phase and then applying pressure with the ball. Santner admits they would have taken 250 at the start of the day but concedes that the pitch offered more spin than anticipated. He is pleased with their efforts in the first Powerplay, where they picked up key wickets, and highlights Kane Williamson finding form as a positive takeaway from the match.

Varun Chakaravarthy is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his five-wicket haul. He says that he was feeling nervous at the start as he had not played many ODIs but as the game progressed, he felt better with each wicket. Adds that everyone talked to him, particularly Virat and Rohit, and they helped him to settle down his nerves. Mentions that he found out last night that he will be playing in this game. Further adds that he was expecting to play, but on the other side, he was feeling nervous. Tells that the pitch wasn’t a rank-turner, but if you bowled in the right areas with the right lengths, then there was a certain amount of help for the spinners. Concludes by saying that this win was a team effort.

The presentation ceremony...

Earlier, after New Zealand opted to bowl first, Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson combined to dismantle India’s top three in the first Powerplay. Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings with a crucial 98-run stand, but their dismissals came at an inopportune time, stalling India's acceleration. The late flourish never quite materialized, as the Kiwi bowlers cleverly varied their pace and lengths to restrict India to 249. For New Zealand, Matt Henry starred with the ball, claiming a five-wicket haul, while every bowler apart from Michael Bracewell chipped in with at least one wicket.

Axar Patel snared Williamson on the last ball of his spell, tilting the scales massively in India's favour. The Kiwis had a fleeting hope through their skipper Mitchell Santner’s hitting but Varun Chakaravarthy nipped him in the bud and effectively sealed the fate of this game. Varun was instrumental in the middle phase and stood out for India with his maiden ODI five-wicket haul.

In their pursuit of 250, Kane Williamson led the charge for the Kiwis after the early loss of Rachin Ravindra. Will Young's promising stay was cut short, and from there, India applied the brakes through their spinners. It was a real graft out there, but Williamson dug in, and as the ball aged, the Indian spinners found increasing purchase from the surface. The pressure created by the spinners resulted in India picking up wickets at regular intervals. As Williamson kept losing partners, the Kiwis struggled to build any meaningful momentum.

India make it three from three! With this result, they head into the semifinals as Group A toppers and have set up a semifinal showdown with Australia here in Dubai. For New Zealand, it was a trial by spin, with 9 out of 10 wickets falling to the spinners. The relentless stranglehold never allowed them to break free. They now head to Lahore, where they will face the Group B toppers, South Africa for a place in the final.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The Indian players are in a huddle where Rohit Sharma is giving them a last-minute pep talk. Now, they spread out to take their respective field positions. Will Young and Rachin Ravindra are the two openers for New Zealand. Mohammad Shami to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, India have posted a competitive total, but they’ll need a strong effort to keep the Kiwis in check. There was some turn on offer, which could work in their favor, especially with the extra spinner in their lineup. That said, batting tends to get easier under lights, and New Zealand will be counting on that as they aim to secure their spot as Group A toppers. Stay with us as we get ready for the second essay!

Matt Henry, the man of the moment, is up for a quick chat. He says he is pretty happy with his performance as they have put India under pressure but the batters will have a big job to do. Adds that there was a bit of swing with the new ball and they created pressure with early wickets. Mentions that getting those wickets against a good batting lineup like India has always been good for him. Further adds that the batters of his team just have to put pressure back on the Indian side and keep the scoreboard ticking.

New Zealand, on the other hand, were solid right from the start. Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson were outstanding with the new ball, striking early to remove three key batters. They faced a brief period where chances were hard to come by but maintained tight lines without offering many freebies. Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner were as reliable as ever in the middle overs, with Rachin Ravindra also making valuable contributions. Will O'Rourke got the crucial breakthrough of Shreyas Iyer with a well-directed short ball just as he was starting to accelerate. Their death bowling was exceptional, keeping the scoring in check, and Matt Henry capped it off in style with a brilliant five-wicket haul.

For the first time in this Champions Trophy, India found themselves under pressure in the first Powerplay. They lost three early wickets, with Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma departing quickly, while Virat Kohli couldn’t make an impact in his 300th ODI, thanks to a stunning catch from Glenn Phillips. However, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel led the recovery, steadying the innings with a crucial 98-run stand. Just when Iyer seemed settled, he fell, but not before playing some aggressive shots. He managed 79, leaving the all-rounders to take charge. Hardik Pandya put up a fight with a run-a-ball 45, but the Kiwis kept things tight, never really allowing him to break free.

A brilliant bowling display from the Kiwis! They have managed to keep India under 250, which is no small feat against such a formidable batting lineup. Matt Henry was the standout performer with a superb five-wicket haul, but credit must also go to their sharp fielding and some outstanding catches that have made the difference here.

OUT! TAKEN! Matt Henry completes his five-wicket haul on the last ball of the innings! A superb final over from Henry. 2 wickets and just 5 runs off it to restrict India to 249. Henry lands it on a length and rolls his fingers on the ball, on middle, Shami has a heave across the line but gets more height than distance on it. It goes only as far as deep mid-wicket where Glenn Phillips runs in off the ropes and takes a safe catch.

Halt! Mohammad Shami has been hit by the ball on the back of his right shoulder. He looks in a bit of pain and the physio is in to check on him. We are good to go again.

49.52

Ouch, that will hurt! Henry takes pace off and goes fuller, at the stumps, Shami swings early and gets it off the bottom part of the bat. Manages to clear the bowler and it dribbles to the right of long off. Shami comes charging back for the second run. Mitchell Santner picks it up and fires in a throw towards the batting end. The throw goes onto hit Shami on the right shoulder who had his back towards the ball.

49.41

Henry continues to be on the shorter side, outside off, Kuldeep walks across his stumps and drags it towards square leg for a single.

Kuldeep Yadav comes out to the middle now.

49.3W

OUT! TAKEN! Turning out to be an excellent final over from Henry! Henry serves another bumper and gets it high enough to trouble the batter and tucks up the batter for room too. Pandya stays deep in the crease and swings for the pull. Skies it up towards deep square leg where Rachin Ravindra settles under it and takes it to his left.

49.31wd

Wide! Henry goes short but this time, it sails over the batter's head for a wide.

49.20

That would have been an outstanding catch had that been taken! A well-directed bumper at the batter, Pandya is tucked up for room and the ball gets big on him. Swings for the pull but gets it only as far as deep mid-wicket. Glenn Phillips swoops in and puts in a full-length dive ahead but fails to get there. No single taken.

49.21wd

Wide! Goes searching for the wide yorker but this is sprayed beyond the tramline on off. Hardik lets it be.

48.46

SIX! All the way! A bit too predictable from Jamieson, leg cutter and it is bowled into the wicket, on off. Not short enough to trouble the batter, Pandya waits for it on the back foot and nails the pull over deep mid-wicket for a six.

48.34

FOUR! Nothing streaky about this one! Kyle does not offer any pace at all, on a length, outside off, Pandya frees his arms, holds his shape and thumps it over extra cover. The ball bounces just in front of the boundary cushions.

48.24

Drinks! The game is pretty much in the balance here as both teams continue to fight. New Zealand need 106 runs in the last 15 overs, but they have lost four wickets. Though their most experienced batter, Kane Williamson is at the crease, who is looking pretty solid and the team will rely on him to get them over the line. On the other hand, India have done well by picking up wickets at regular intervals but they have dropped a couple of chances as well.

OUT! TAKEN! Will O'Rourke gets the set batter! Once again, a break in play brings in a wicket for the fielding side. The short ball plan has finally worked for New Zealand. This one is banged into the pitch again at 143 clicks, on middle, but this time it bounces a bit extra. Shreyas Iyer decides to take it on and looks to pull but the ball gets big on him. He gets a top edge that flies behind mid-wicket where Will Young runs backwards, fumbles it on the first attempt but hangs onto it on the second. Iyer walks back after an excellent 79 off 98, and India lose half their side now!

36.12

Short of a length and on middle, Shreyas Iyer pulls it just over mid-wicket for a couple of runs.

DRINKS BREAK! New Zealand struck at the right time by removing Axar Patel, but they haven't quite managed to tighten the screws. Shreyas Iyer has been swift in punishing loose deliveries, while KL Rahul has settled in nicely. With wickets in hand, India will back themselves to accelerate at the death, but a couple of quick strikes could turn the tide. The Kiwis need to stay patient and keep pushing. The pitch has shown signs of turn, and with India boasting four spinners, chasing won't be easy. However, if it settles under the lights and starts skidding onto the bat, it could be a different story.

Drinks! India are still in the rebuilding phase after losing three early wickets. Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel need to extend this partnership for as long as possible with a lot of firepower still to come. New Zealand have been one of the best sides to squeeze teams in the middle overs with their spinners and they will look to exactly do that here too. An exciting phase of cricket awaits us.

We are done with the national anthems and it's now time for the action to commence. Mitchell Santner and his men disperse from the huddle and take their respective positions on the field. They are followed by the two Indian openers, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma. Matt Henry will open the attack for the Kiwis. Henry to the Indian captain first up. A slip in place. And off we go...

The giant flags of the two countries have been rolled out, and it is time for the national anthems. The match officials lead the way as the two teams, along with their mascots, make their way to the centre. It will be India's national anthem first, followed by that of New Zealand.

The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma says they wanted to bat first anyway. Adds that having batted second in the past two games, they wanted to bat first and give their bowlers a chance to challenge themselves under lights. Mentions that they want to do things that are useful to them and try to keep things simple. Says that it is all about bowling in partnerships and their seamers and spinners have complemented each other nicely. Informs Harshit Rana has been rested and Varun Chakaravarthy comes in place of him.

Mitchell Santner, the skipper of New Zealand, says that they are going to bowl first as it looks like a pretty good wicket and they have seen a couple of games here. Tells that they want to put pressure early on with their bowling and then want to chase it. Adds that they know they have to go back to Lahore to play in the semi-final and they want to get the job done here. Informs that Daryl Mitchell comes in place of Devon Conway.

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammad Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy (In for Harshit Rana).

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Rachin Ravindra, Will Young, Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell (In for Devon Conway), Tom Latham (WK), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (C), Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Will O'Rourke.

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in the favour of Mitchell Santner. New Zealand have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Simon Doull is near the deck. He says that the weather is brilliant, with a high of 24 degrees Celsius and a low of 21 degrees Celsius. Adds that a gentle breeze is blowing across the ground. Mentions that the square boundaries measure 63 metres to one side and 71 meters to the other, while the straight hit is 76 meters. Dinesh Karthik joins Doull for the analysis. Karthik informs that this is a black soil wicket with the soil sourced from Pakistan. Further says that the pitch resembles those used in the last couple of matches, appearing on the drier side. States it offers assistance to spinners during the day but it gets better to bat under the lights. Shares that pacers have had a better strike rate and taken more wickets here in Dubai, whereas spinners have maintained a tighter economy rate.

The venue has so far assisted spinners, which plays into the strengths of both teams as they have world-class spin options. The weather looks perfect, with no threat of rain or dew, meaning the toss won’t be a major factor. Even though both teams have already reached the semi-finals, this match will be a crucial test before the semis against a top-quality opposition. Expect a high-intensity battle as both sides look to fine-tune their game and carry winning momentum into the knockouts. Stay tuned, as the toss and playing XI are coming up soon!

New Zealand, on the other hand, have been one of the most well-balanced teams in this tournament and are strong contenders for the title. One of their biggest strengths is their outstanding fielding, which sets them apart from other teams. The only concern is their most experienced batter, Kane Williamson, hasn’t been at his best, getting out cheaply in both matches. His form will be crucial in the knockout stage, and New Zealand will hope he gets some runs today. Their skipper, Mitchell Santner, will be a key player on this pitch. By using his variations smartly, he has shown why he is regarded as one of the best spinners in the world. Given they are scheduled to travel after this game, the Kiwis too might think about resting some players.

India look like a well-settled and balanced side, with all departments performing well as they showed against Pakistan in their last match. All eyes will be on Virat Kohli, who is set to play his 300th ODI, making this a special occasion for him. He is also back in top form, having scored a century in his last match. Shubman Gill is in sublime touch as well, with two centuries and two half-centuries in his last five ODIs. With India’s semi-final scheduled just a day after this match in Dubai, they might consider resting some key players, especially the bowlers, to keep them fresh. However, the big question is, who will be rested? That mystery will be revealed at the toss.

Hello and welcome to the final group-stage match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where India take on New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium. While both teams have already secured their spots in the semi-finals, this match still carries significant importance. The winner here will top Group A and face Australia in the semis, whereas the loser will go up against the table-topper from Group B, South Africa. Regardless of the outcome, the semi-final venues are already set, with India playing in Dubai and New Zealand heading to Lahore for their knockout clash.

... MATCH DAY ...

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is hurtling toward its climactic showdown. But first, one last delicious appetizer awaits cricket fans as bitter rivals India and New Zealand prepare to lock horns in what promises to be a Group A thriller. Sure, some might dismiss it as a dead rubber, but don't be fooled. For both powerhouses, this clash represents the perfect dress rehearsal before the high-stakes knockout battles begin. But, more than that, it's a fight about who tops the Group A. Fresh and recharged after nearly a week's breather, Team India returns to familiar territory following their masterclass dismantling of Pakistan. Dubai's exclusive status as Team India's tournament home has certainly sparked whispers in cricket circles. But hey, that's just noise outside the boundary rope. Looking at how their tournament has unfolded, India's batting unit has found a solid rhythm. The pre-tournament concerns about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's form have largely been addressed, with Rohit providing energetic starts and Kohli delivering when needed most - highlighted by that composed century against Pakistan. Shubman Gill continues his impressive rise, consistently finding runs against quality bowling. The middle order has shown competence when called upon, with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul making valuable contributions in their limited opportunities. Hardik Pandya has been more effective with the ball than bat, claiming timely wickets throughout the group stage. In the bowling department, Shami and Rana have generated good pace and movement, while Kuldeep Yadav has maintained his reputation as a crafty spinner who can turn matches. The bench strength remains ready to step in, though they'll be eager for playing time after waiting in the wings. When it comes to ICC tournaments, the Kiwis consistently elevate their game to championship level. Like their Indian counterparts, New Zealand has dismantled both Pakistan and Bangladesh with clinical efficiency. Their batting has been particularly impressive, producing three centurions in just two matches. Tom Latham and Will Young steadied the ship with match-winning hundreds against Pakistan, while Rachin Ravindra immediately stamped his authority with a spectacular century upon returning to the side. The one missing piece in their batting puzzle is Kane Williamson. The typically reliable stalwart has only managed two single-digit scores thus far in the tournament. Should the maestro rediscover his form before the semifinals, New Zealand's batting lineup would become even more formidable for any opposition to contain. The Kiwis' reputation for athletic fielding is embodied perfectly by Glenn Phillips, whose acrobatic saves and bullet throws have become tournament highlights. He has also stepped up significantly with his all-round abilities. While New Zealand's pace attack has operated with impressive discipline and coordination, it's their spin contingent that could prove decisive against India. The ever-reliable Mitchell Santner continues to strangle run-scoring with his metronomic accuracy, while Michael Bracewell, who has emerged as the leading wicket-taker among spinners with the lowest economy rate, seems to have gone under the radar. His ability to build pressure through those streak dot balls makes him another tactical weapon. Add Phillips' useful off-spin to the mix, and the Kiwis have all the tools to test India batters, who have fairly been vulnerable against spin lately. With the Indian batsmen having faced limited spin bowling in the tournament thus far, and the Dubai pitches showing signs of slowing down, New Zealand's spinners might hold the key to testing their opponents' technique and temperament. Cricketing pundits have installed New Zealand as second favorites to lift the trophy and with good reason. Unlike India's fixed venue advantage, the Kiwis have been required to adapt to varying conditions across four different stadiums throughout their group campaign. Now they fly over a thousand kilometres from Pakistan to Dubai for this final league game. Both teams have won their last five ODIs respectively and this marks their first one-day clash after their previous meet at the Wankhede in the 2023 World Cup semifinal. India also holds an edge with a 5-0 lead in their head-to-heads, but can they extend this streak further? Or will Santner’s troops respond strongly this time around? Another mouth-watering clash awaits to light up the ring of fire in Dubai!
