Commentary

Right then, that it is it from this run-fest where Australia registers a record-breaking win over England. Now, from one big rivalry, we shift our focus to another as arch-rivals Pakistan and India go up against each other in the Champions Trophy 2025. That clash is scheduled to be played on 23rd February, Sunday at 9 am GMT. But as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Steve Smith, the victorious skipper of Australia says that the guys were outstanding as Matthew Short played beautifully up the order and then the partnership between Alex Carey and Josh Inglis was so good. He feels that Travis Head and he has missed out today but he is happy with the win. Adds that they would have bowled first, regardless of their team, and batting at the back end is easy compared to the first inning. They have trained for that in the last couple of days. They knew that 350 was gonna be chaseable but for a moment when they lost four wickets, it looked like it was a big score to chase down but the hundred of Josh Inglis was too outstanding. Mentions that trusting each other is the key and the bowlers did a really good job in the first inning, especially in the back end of the first inning. Talks about the batting of both keepers, as they have been batting like a dream for a while now. Josh Inglis hits the ball really well down the ground and he congratulates him for his maiden ODI hundred.

The captain of England, Jos Buttler says that it was a fantastic innings from Josh Inglis. Mentions that they would have taken 350 at the start of the day but they were a bit concerned about the dew and it making batting easier in the second half. Says that Ben Duckett played brilliantly and he has been incredible for them in all three formats. Adds that they want players in the side to go on and make big contributions. Shares that he is delighted for Duckett but it is a shame that he ended up on the losing side. Mentions that the guys are experienced enough in the side and they know the importance of building partnerships.

Josh Inglis is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his fantastic century. He says that he is feeling over the moon. Obviously, it is a great win, and that too coming up against England. He is pumped and it has been a great performance overall from the team. Adds that there wasn’t much discussion at the halfway mark in the dressing room as they knew the dew would come and batting second would be easier. Talks about his partnership with Alex Carey, and says that he doesn’t talk too much when he bats. Further adds that the part-time options of England were handy as they have bowled a lot in international cricket but he knew the dew would make it easy for batting in the end. Concludes by saying it is a big win and this will boost their confidence.

Presentation Time...

England will be gutted with their bowling and fielding effort. Jofra Archer and Mark Wood struck early, but they couldn’t capitalize, letting Australia off the hook. Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone sparked hopes with timely breakthroughs, yet England failed to seize the moment. Archer’s costly drop of Carey only added to their woes, and though Brydon Carse eventually sent him back, the damage was already done. With dew making life miserable for the bowlers, runs flowed freely at the death, leaving England with a bitter pill to swallow.

Earlier in the game, England put up a mammoth total, powered by Ben Duckett’s sensational big-daddy hundred, Joe Root’s elegant fifty, and Jofra Archer’s explosive finish. Australia had their moments with the ball - Ben Dwarshuis led the charge with three crucial scalps, while Adam Zampa and Marnus Labuschagne struck twice each, and Glenn Maxwell chipped in with one as they pulled things back a bit towards the end.

Australia battled early trouble, losing wickets upfront, but Matthew Short and Marnus Labuschagne dug deep, stitching a vital 95-run stand to steady the innings. Marnus anchored the middle order while Short notched up a classy fifty, though both departed in quick succession, leaving the chase in the balance. Enter Alex Carey and Josh Inglis, who turned the tide with counter-attacking fifties and a brilliant century stand, keeping up with the required rate. Carey fell, but Glenn Maxwell’s fireworks and Inglis' breathtaking maiden ODI ton sealed a remarkable win, showcasing Australia’s depth and resilience in style!

The World Champions roar into action with a stunning victory, pulling off the highest-ever ODI chase in ICC tournament history! A masterclass under pressure from Australia, and they extend their dominance over arch-rivals England, who now face a tough situation in their remaining games to keep their semifinal hopes alive.

SIX! AND THAT'S THAT! Josh Inglis fittingly seals a remarkable Aussie win with a six! Wood goes full, on middle and leg, Inglis brings his bottom hand into play and picks it up nicely. Whips it towards deep mid-wicket where Joe Root leaps and gets a hand to it but it is not enough to prevent the six. Inglis punches the air in delight as Australia register a famous win in Lahore and get their campaign off to a winning start.

Wood drags the length back and bowls it on middle, Maxwell backs away and pulls it through mid-wicket for a single.

NO BALL! Archer gets it all wrong as the ball slips out of his hand and it goes around the waist. Maxwell is hurried as he tries to swipe it across the line and also gets tucked up for room. It goes only as far as deep mid-wicket where Liam Livingstone takes it. Livingstone completes the catch and releases the throw immediately as the batters cross. It is referred upstairs and the replays confirm that the ball was indeed above the waist. The third umpire then checks whether the batters crossed before the catch was completed. He gives his verdict that the catch was completed first and then the batters crossed. So, it will be Maxwell on strike for the Free Hit.

Is that a No Ball? It certainly slipped out of Jofra Archer's hand as he served a high full toss here. The replay rolls out and it is clearly above the waist height. The umpire signals a No Ball and it will be a Free Hit. The umpires now want to make sure who is on strike and it will be Glenn Maxwell.

46.44

FOUR! Powered away! Australia are just a couple of big hits away now. Need 11 more runs now. Jofra hurls it fuller, on off, Maxwell presses back and winds up. Gets his hands through the line of the ball and spanks it to the left of mid off for a boundary.

Commentary

Welcome back to the chase. The umpires have come out to the middle followed by England's players who are spreading out in the field led by their skipper Jos Buttler. The openers of Australia have also made their way out. It will be Travis Head and Matthew Short to open the inning for them in this chase. Mark Wood will start with the new ball for England. Two slips in place. Here we go!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, England have posted an imposing total of 351, the highest in the history of this competition. Australia will need to bat exceptionally well to chase it down, and a strong start in the first Powerplay will be crucial. They will also be hoping for dew to settle in, which could make batting easier while adding to the bowlers' challenges. Back for the chase in a bit.

Joe Root is up for a quick chat. He says that it was a nice partnership, as the wicket is quite slow and it has been overall a good inning to get this score in the end. He is pretty happy at the halfway of the inning. Talks about the inning of Ben Duckett - he says that the way he paced his inning was quite amazing to see, and rotating the strike against spinners with him was easy. Mentions that the bowlers of Australia changed the pace quite nicely and small variations made it tough to hit the ball. Feels that they have to use the pitch to make it difficult for their batters to score runs and we have an advantage of the score on the board.

Duckett, though, continued to play aggressively before eventually falling for a well-made 165. The southpaw fell at a crucial juncture but some lusty blows towards the end from Jofra Archer took England past 350. For Australia, Ben Dwarshuis impressed in the pace department with three wickets, while Adam Zampa made his presence felt with a couple of scalps. Nathan Ellis went wicketless but was the most economical on the day for Australia.

After the early setbacks, Ben Duckett and Joe Root steadied the innings, building a fluent partnership. The duo took control in the middle phase, stitching together a 158-run stand, with Duckett going on to notch his third ODI century. England reached 200 by the 30-over mark, setting themselves up for a big finish. However, Adam Zampa struck twice to halt their momentum, and Australia capitalized by chipping away at the wickets to apply the brakes.

England eventually surpass 350 and while it is a strong total, they might feel they left a few runs out there. They had 200 on the board by the 30-over mark, a platform from which teams often look to double their score in the final 20 overs. However, Australia's spirited fight back saw the batting side muster 151 runs in the last 20 overs. Earlier, after opting to bowl first, Australia did well to claim a couple of wickets in the first Powerplay, despite minimal assistance for the bowlers. One of those dismissals was a stunning grab by Alex Carey.

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! That is a fantastic catch! Tossed up, full and on middle, turns away. Brydon Carse goes down for the slog sweep but gets a top edge. The ball goes straight up behind the bowler. Marnus Labuschagne runs backwards, keeps his eyes on the ball, and dives to grab it brilliantly. Australia have pulled things back nicely in the last few overs!

49.12

DROPPED! A top effort though! Floated, full and on middle, Brydon Carse swipes it aerially towards deep mid-wicket. Glenn Maxwell charges forward and dives to grab it with the ball dying on him but just spills it out. Two runs taken.

OUT! LBW! Marnus Labuschagne joins the party now! He gets rid of the centurion and that will surely make an impact on the final total. This is very slow through the air, short and on middle. Ben Duckett goes down to sweep it away but is way, way early through his shot and gets hit on the thigh pad right in front of the stumps. There is a huge appeal for LBW, and up goes the finger. However, Duckett takes the review, but UltraEdge and Ball Tracking both go against him. He walks back to a standing ovation for his exceptional 165 off 143.

47.11

DRINKS BREAK! With Australia needing 140 runs from 108 balls, the game is finely poised and has all the makings of a thrilling finish. Australia lost their two set batters in quick succession, but Alex Carey and Josh Inglis have steadied the innings with a solid partnership. England have struggled to stem the flow of runs and desperately need a breakthrough to mount pressure. With dew starting to form, things are only getting tougher for the bowlers. To make matters worse, Jofra Archer has been off the field with what appears to be cramps, and his fitness for the remaining five overs remains uncertain. Adil Rashid has been England’s most effective bowler on the night, and his four remaining overs could well shape the outcome of this contest.

DRINKS BREAK! Australia have had a start similar to England, losing a couple of wickets in the first Powerplay. However, Matthew Short and Marnus Labuschagne have steadied the innings with a fluent partnership, remaining largely untroubled. Boundaries have come at regular intervals, keeping the chase on track. England will need to find a way to stem the flow of runs, and we could soon see spin being introduced from both ends. However, with no specialist fifth bowling option, England will have to rely on Liam Livingstone and Joe Root to fill in those overs.

Done with the pre-match formalities! It's now time for two of the biggest rivals to battle it out on the field. The Australian players are taking up their respective field positions. Phil Salt and Ben Duckett are the two openers for England. Spencer Johnson has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

We are moments away from the start of this big clash, but before that, the players from both sides make their way out to the middle and line up for their respective national anthems. It will be England's first followed by the national anthem of Australia.

Phil Salt is in for a chat. With this being the first game of the tournament, he says that are looking to do the basics right, lay a marker and most importantly, come away with a win. On being relieved of the wicketkeeping duties for this game, he says that today is a great opportunity to get involved in the field and make an impact. Mentions that there are a lot of guys in the squad who have done well here and have good knowledge of the conditions, which he hopes will stand the team in good stead. Tells that the India series taught them a lot and it gave them a chance to drill into the basics. States that he and Ben Duckett have different styles and they hit the ball in different areas, but they complement each other well.

The skipper of England, Jos Buttler says that they would have batted first as they are not sure whether dew will be a factor or not. Adds that they are very excited for this game and whenever you play Australia in an ICC event, you want to be part of it. Mentions that Jamie Smith has immense quality and he has shown that in recent times and that they have skilled players around him to help him improve even further.

The captain of Australia, Steve Smith says that it looks like a pretty good surface and adds that there was some dew when they trained at night, hence, they want to bowl first. Mentions that they have two left-arm seamers in Ben Dwarshuis and Spencer Johnson. Talks about the form of Carrey and that he is a quality batter. Concludes it by saying that they are excited for today’s game.

England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith (WK), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (C), Liam Livingstone, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

Australia (Playing XI) - Travis Head, Matthew Short, Steve Smith (C), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis (WK), Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson.

TOSS - Australia have won the toss and they will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Simon Doull is pitchside. He starts by saying that it is a pleasant day in Lahore. Informs that the square boundaries are skewed with 63 metres on one side and 73 metres to the other, while the straight boundary is 74 metres. Mentions that this is a fantastic-looking surface and it is one where the batters will prosper. Adds that it has a nice covering of grass and it is hard underneath. Expects the outfield to be lightning-quick.

The pitch at the Gaddafi Stadium is expected to favour batters, with 300 being crossed in 3 of the last 4 innings. There won’t be much dew but considering that rain has been around Lahore, it could help the pacers extract some movement early on. With both sides having plenty to prove, expect a blockbuster contest in Lahore. Don’t go anywhere as the toss and playing XI aren’t far away!

England, on the other hand, announced their playing XI two days before the match. Joe Root’s experience will be vital, especially after England’s struggles in the India series, where they failed to bat 50 overs in all three matches. Harry Brook will also be key, given his excellent record in Pakistan, while skipper Jos Buttler will be eager to step up after an underwhelming return from injury. Jofra Archer and Mark Wood can generate express speed, while Brydon Carse adds variety with his ability to hit the deck hard and generate extra pace off the wicket. However, their most important bowler would be Adil Rashid, who was England’s best performer in the India series, controlling the middle overs and taking crucial wickets.

Australia face a major setback with key players missing. Their famous pace trio, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, are unavailable, with Starc pulling out due to personal reasons, while Cummins and Hazlewood are injured. As a result, Steve Smith takes charge as captain, and the onus will be on experienced batters like Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell to carry the team. The new-look pace attack, featuring Nathan Ellis, Spencer Johnson, Sean Abbott, and Ben Dwarshuis, lacks international experience in the format but offers variety. Adam Zampa’s role in the middle overs will be crucial as he is their most reliable wicket-taking option in spin-friendly conditions.

Hello and welcome to the fourth match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 from the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where Australia and England lock horns in a high-voltage clash. Coming into this event, England suffered a 3-0 whitewash against India, while Australia faced a 2-0 defeat against Sri Lanka. Given the format of the tournament, every game carries immense importance, and a loss here could push either team into a must-win situation moving forward, more so with South Africa and Afghanistan being the other two teams in this group.

... MATCH DAY ...

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set for a fiery showdown as England and Australia lock horns at Lahore’s iconic Gaddafi Stadium. Two of cricket’s fiercest rivals, both teams will be desperate to kick off their campaign with a statement win. England, led by Jos Buttler, are out to prove a point after their crushing 3-0 ODI series defeat to India. But having fully fit Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, their pace attack suddenly looks more menacing. The ever-reliable Joe Root brings experience, while Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone inject raw power into the batting. Ben Duckett and Phil Salt make up a destructive opening pair while the talented Jamie Smith will look to make his mark as well. Spin wizard Adil Rashid will be key in containing Australia’s firepower, but the onus is on Buttler to lead from the front and turn England’s white-ball fortunes around. Meanwhile, Australia enters the tournament with their own share of struggles. Regular skipper Pat Cummins, along with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Marsh, is sidelined, leaving the Aussies with an inexperienced bowling attack. But under Steve Smith’s captaincy, they remain a dangerous unit. With Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey anchoring the batting and Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell ready to unleash fireworks, they won’t go down without a fight. Spencer Johnson steps into the big shoes of Starc, while Adam Zampa and Tanveer Sangha will have to spin their magic on a pitch expected to favor batters. The Gaddafi Stadium promises runs, but under the lights, the pacers could still play a decisive role. Both teams know that a win here isn’t just about two points - it’s about momentum, confidence, and striking an early psychological blow in a tournament where there’s little room for slip-ups. With pride, history, and a potential semi-final spot at stake, expect nothing less than an electrifying contest between two giants of the game.
