Commentary

Right then, what a weekend in the Champions Trophy we have witnessed! We've seen two classic rivalries of world cricket reignited. Last time around, we saw Australia gun down a record total before India didn't make much fuss about a 240-odd chase, both against their arch-rivals. India's win has now propelled them to 4 points and the next game in Group A becomes almost decisive. Next up, Bangladesh take on New Zealand in Rawalpindi on Monday, 24 February. If the Black Caps win, we will get our two semifinalists from Group A but if the Bangla Tigers get the win, things will get very interesting. That game will begin at 9 am GMT (2.30 pm IST) but as usual, you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Till then, take care and goodbye!

The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma says that he is happy with the way they started with the ball and it was a superb effort to restrict Pakistan to 241. Mentions that they had the experience to chase down the total. Lauds Axar, Kuldeep and Jadeja for the way they bowled in the middle phase. Adds that all three of them know what is required of them. States that it was a collective effort with the ball with the pacers also coming to the party. Shares that they have played a lot of cricket together and every individual knows his job. Feels that having 6 bowling options can be tricky but it is about knowing who is difficult for the batters to score off on the day.  Says that Virat Kohli loves representing the country and he did what he does best. When asked about his hamstring, Rohit replies that he is doing okay at the moment.

The captain of Pakistan, Mohammad Rizwan says they didn't take benefit of winning the toss. Says their aim was to get past 270 but appreciates the Indian bowlers for bowling very well in the middle overs and chipping in with crucial wickets. Mentions that with him and Saud Shakeel settled well, they aimed to take the game deep and bat till the end. But accepts that their shot selection was not up to the mark and rues for this being the reason for them getting limited to 240. Appreciates Abrar Ahmed for bowling decently and for giving them a crucial wicket of Gill. He mentions improving in the fielding department is important. Also accepts that they made a lot of mistakes and is hopeful to work on them in the next game.

Virat Kohli is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning ton. Mentions that it feels good to be able to bat in that manner in a crucial game and contribute to the team's cause. Tells that his job was pretty clear and he had to be there to stitch a partnership after the kind of start they got. Adds that his job was to take the pacers on and keep turning the strike over against the spinners. Shares that he is happy with the template of his innings. States that he has a decent understanding of his game over the years. Says that it is important for him to keep the outside noise and distractions away and focus on the job at hand. Reckons that in ODI cricket, clarity is very important and you should play your shots against the pacers or else the spinners will come and mount more pressure on you. Appreciates Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill for the way they have been batting at the top of the order and setting a platform for the middle order. When asked if a week off is a good or bad thing, he jokingly says that for him at the age of 36, it is a good thing and these conditions take a lot out of him.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Mohammad Rizwan didn't have much hesitation in batting first and it seemed like even Rohit Sharma would have chosen the same. Pakistan began in a much better fashion than their previous game but lost both their openers in a jiffy inside the Powerplay. Mohammad Rizwan had to rebuild the innings along with Saud Shakeel but the duo took a fair bit of time to get going. Shakeel did look in fine touch and Rizwan also managed to capitalize later on but again, they lost both set batters which ended up hurting them quite a bit and they hobbled their way to 241 runs. For India, Hardik Pandya was the pick of the seamers but the others bowled really well and Kuldeep Yadav was able to rip through the middle order at the right moment for his side.

Things got a bit dramatic towards the end of the chase as Iyer departed after his 50 and Hardik Pandya came in and went back quickly. India had the job done but one thing was still remaining. Kohli broke quite a few records in this game as he not only went past 14,000 ODI runs but then became the third-highest ever run-getter in men's international cricket behind the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara and to top it all off, he hit the winning runs and brought up ODI ton number 51.

Pakistan had to attack from the get-go as they didn't have too many runs on the board and it was Shaheen Afridi who went searching for the wickets. However, he was a bit too full and put away for boundaries before coming back strongly and getting rid of the Indian skipper. Apart from that, the pacers didn't conjure up many opportunities and it was the leg spinner, Abrar Ahmed who bowled a lovely spell and probably bowled the ball of the tournament thus far, knocking over Gill. The pacers though were certainly off color, especially Shaheen even after picking up a couple of wickets whereas Haris Rauf bowled decently and Khushdil Shah got a wicket as well.

242 wasn't a big score to chase down but India did hobble a bit last time around chasing just under 230 against Bangladesh. However, the surface in this game held together well and wasn't nearly as slow as that one. Rohit Sharma yet again provided a quick start but soon perished after which Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli stitched together a solid stand. Gill failed to reach yet another half-century as he was undone by a ripper of a delivery. Kohli though took on the mantle and kept the tempo up. He had Shreyas Iyer for company but he started slow. They did manage to get through a phase of some tight bowling and then both batters just went after the bowlers.

INDIA HAVE ONE FOOT IN THE SEMIS! India have grabbed the bragging rights in this arch-rivalry and have now made it three-a-piece in head-to-head games against Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy. Pakistan meanwhile have been pushed to the brink and the reigning champions are in serious danger of bowing out even before their final group game.

THE KING HAS ADDED ANOTHER JEWEL TO HIS CROWN! AN UNBEATEN HUNDRED FOR VIRAT KOHLI! 51st ODI century for him, his 4th against Pakistan and overall hundred number 82, across formats in international cricket for one of the modern-day greats of the sport! Couldn't be a more picture-perfect run chase for India! Shah bowls it on a nagging length, and the line is outside off, Virat Kohli steps down to the pitch of the ball and slaps it past covers for a boundary. Takes off the helmet, raises his bat skywards, and soaks in all the acknowledgment from the crowd in Dubai. The Indian dressing room erupts in joy with captain Rohit Sharma admiring Kohli's knock with a satisfying broad smile on his face. INDIA WIN BY 6 WICKETS IN HAND AND 7 OVERS LEFT!

42.21

Back of a length, on off, Axar Patel works it straight down the ground for a single.

42.11

Interestingly, Kohli takes a single! Good length, around off, worked through the cover space for a single.

Oh, had to hurry and a direct hit might have been curtains for Kohli! Bowled fuller and around off, Kohli slaps it to mid off and scoots off for a single. The fielder is quick to pick and release the throw at the bowling end but misses. Kohli retains the strike with a huge cheer from the crowd.

41.52

Two more! Full toss, on off, Virat Kohli mistimes the pull shot but manages to get it over mid-wicket, and motors back for the second run. On 94 now, just a hit away! India need 5 to win.

41.42

IN THE AIR...LANDS SAFE! Length ball, on the stumps, Virat Kohli heaves but mistimes it over mid on for a couple of runs.

41.41wd

WIDE! Over the top of the batter's head, outside off, Virat Kohli leaves. A bit of boos around in the crowd as well.

41.32

Excellent running this! Short of a good length, on off, Virat Kohli stays on the back foot and pulls it away to deep mid-wicket for a quick couple of runs. Kohli into his 90s now!

41.31wd

WIDE! Outside the tramline, left alone by Kohli.

41.32wd

It just keeps getting worse for Pakistan! Sprays it way down leg on a length, does Shaheen. It lands and stays low as Axar misses to tickle it away. Rolls on a couple of bounces towards Rizwan who gets a bad bounce and the ball beats his dive to the right. The ball rolls towards the deep fine fence and just plugs before. They cross but it should have been more.

41.21

Way too short towards the batter's helmet, Kohli steers it down with the pull and gets it wide of mid-wicket for a single.

41.11

Digs it in short, on the body, Axar climbs on the bounce and nudges it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Dragged length, on the leg stump, Virat Kohli gets on the back foot and works it to the square leg region.

40.51

Good length, angling on the pads, Axar tickles it to short fine for one.

40.40

Length, on the stumps, dabbed to mid-wicket.

40.31

An appeal for LBW, but not given. Rizwan has a detailed chat with the bowler and opts to go upstairs. Agha bowls it quick and flat, drifting towards the leg stump line, on a fuller length. Virat Kohli sits down to play the sweep shot but the ball passes really close to the inside edge before clipping the pad. UltraEdge shows a spike on the inside edge as the ball runs down to the fine leg region. A single taken.

Review! Salman Agha was pretty sure that he got his man here but the umpire turned down the appeal for LBW. Mohammad Rizwan isn't highly convinced either but does review it. Virat Kohli is the man in question and UltraEdge shows a faint inside edge. NOT OUT it remains.

40.20

Back of a length, on middle, Kohli hangs back and punches it to mid-wicket.

40.10

Angling the pads, on a length, flicked away to square leg.

Axar Patel walks out to bat now.

Commentary

We are back for the all-important run chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and the players of Pakistan can be seen in a huddle near the boundary ropes as Mohammad Rizwan tries to pump them up with his words. The duo of Shubman Gill and the skipper, Rohit Sharma walk out to open the innings for India. Interesting to see if Rohit is able to move freely as he did go off the field in the first innings due to a niggle. Shaheen Afridi will get proceedings underway with the ball. Just the one slip in place, let's go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Well then, as it is seen, once the ball gets older, it becomes increasingly harder to score runs, especially for the new batters. So it will be interesting to see how Rizwan shuffles his pace attack with only one frontline spinner and two part-timers in the mix. In a high-stakes clash like this, a target of 242 might just play like 260 or a bit more, given the pressure and intensity of the contest. With the pitch expected to slow down further, it will be a challenging chase for India. So, which side of the Radcliffe Line will celebrate tonight? Will the Men in Blue send the defending champions to the brink of elimination? Or can the title holders Pakistan get the better of this Indian side? A lot is at stake and expect a more thrilling second innings. Run chase up next very shortly.

Saud Shakeel is in for a chat. He feels that he got out at the wrong time and should have spent more time in the middle. Adds that he wanted to take a chance but it did not come off for him. Shares that the ball wasn't coming onto the bat early on. Further says that the pitch is on the slower side. Mentions that early wickets will be key for them.

At one point, it seemed Pakistan were on track to push past 270, which, surely could have been a very challenging total with Rizwan and Shakeel looking solid in the middle. But those wickets came as a much-needed spark for India, just as the death overs loomed and two new batters stepped in. Salman Agha and Khushdil focused on working the singles, building a platform for a strong finish, but the duo still had plenty of work to do. However, they kept losing one too many in that phase and India just put on the squeeze after that. Khushdil Shah was the lone recognized batter left for Pakistan, with the task of shepherding the tail and also getting a total around about 250. He did strike a few lusty blows but India did not concede too many as pace off worked like a charm. Pakistan could only add 29 runs in the last five.

India went wicketless for nearly 25 overs, mirroring their struggle against Bangladesh where the spinners couldn’t break through. Pakistan, with eight wickets in hand and a good bit of batting still to follow, was in control as Shakeel reached his fifty and Rizwan closed in on his milestone. Rizwan was dropped once however, a lapse in concentration from him proved costly sooner, opening the door for India. Hardik, Jadeja, and Axar capitalized, each striking once to dismantle Pakistan’s middle order and swing the momentum back in India’s favor. Pakistan, losing Rizwan and Shakeel both in a quick span, slipped down from 151/2 to 165/5.

With two fresh batters at the crease, Pakistan entered a rebuilding phase, but the scoring rate slowed as dot balls piled up. Rizwan and Shakeel looked to steady the innings but struggled to rotate the strike consistently, with boundaries coming only occasionally. Hardik, bowling with excellent rhythm, kept the pressure on, limiting Pakistan to just 27 runs in the next ten overs without losing a wicket. As the game progressed, Jadeja and Kuldeep rushed through their overs, tightening the screws and helping India catch up on the over rate. Sensing the need to accelerate, Rizwan and Shakeel broke the lull with a flurry of boundaries around the halfway mark, injecting some much-needed momentum.

Pakistan’s openers began cautiously, negotiating the early movement while picking up timely boundaries. India’s pace duo of Shami and Rana, though slightly erratic, consistently challenged the edges. Babar Azam looked dangerous with his intent and early boundaries but fell to a stunning delivery from Hardik Pandya, while Imam-ul-Haq’s resistance ended with a poor run-out. By the end of the first Powerplay, things were brought to balance as Pakistan were 52/2, with India deploying five bowlers to keep the pressure intact.

Excellent death-over bowling from Harshit Rana. Out of the 10 balls he bowled in these last five overs or so, he conceded just 5 runs off it with a wicket. Barring Shami going for a 14-run over, this has been a tight finish from the Indians. At the pitch report, Ian Bishop and Sunil Gavaskar, both were of the opinion that any total around or above 270 would be a good defending one. So, fair to say that Pakistan would feel they are 20-25 runs short here.

49.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! Up, up, but not long enough! The pressure was on after those dot balls and in the end, Khushdil Shah has been undone by some smart bowling from Harshit Rana. Rana bangs it into the deck, just short of a length and around off, Khushdil Shah tries to get under it and pull it over the fence but loses his balance and skies it up towards the square leg fence. Virat Kohli settles under it and takes a safe catch to bring Khushdil's fighting knock of 38 runs to an end and Pakistan are all out for 241 runs in 49.4 overs.

49.30

This is excellent bowling from Harshit Rana and three dot balls to begin the final over. Slower one, bowled well full and just around off. Khushdil is undone by the length and fails to get a bat on it.

49.20

Doesn't take the single! Pitched up outside off, Khushdil Shah leans back and lofts it over cover but towards the fielder in the deep.

49.10

Full and at the stumps, slower again, Khushdil Shah goes for the slog sweep but is undone by the lack of pace again and toe-ends it onto the off side.

Abrar Ahmed is the last batter for Pakistan. Harshit Rana (7-0-30-0) will bowl the final over.

OUT! RUN OUT! They just had to push for two there but it wasn't quite there for the taking. Shami goes full again and gets the ball to tail back into the toes, Haris Rauf clips it away wide of the fielder at deep mid-wicket and the batters push for two. Axar Patel rushes in and fires in a flat throw at the keeper's end, right on top of the bails and KL Rahul does the rest. Rauf has to walk back here!

Unless there’s a comfortable two on offer, Khushdil Shah is unlikely to take the risk and will want to retain strike for the start of the final over.

48.50

Goes for the toe-crushing yorker at 140.4 clicks and nails it. Haris Rauf makes room to swing across the line but is beaten and the ball goes between the leg stump and the pads.

48.46

SIX! Right off the screws and that one has sailed into the crowd! An attacking short ball, angled in at the batter but Haris Rauf just swings at it and gets a hold of it as the ball clears deep square leg for a biggie. 13 off the over already.

48.31

Banged in on a hard length around middle and leg, Khushdil makes room and hammers it flat and on the bounce to long on for just a single.

48.20

Oh, that's been hit hard but straight at the bowler! Over the wicket now and bowled full and straight at the stumps, Khushdil clears the front leg and drills it straight back but Shami sticks out a boot and firms it. Dot ball!

48.16

SIX! Khushdil Shah finally gets one away! Attempted slower one from around the stumps, bowed a bit too short though, Khushdil swivels and pulls it flat behind deep square leg for a biggie.

47.51

Khushdil can't quite get a hold of the big shots at the moment. Another one bowled at just around 111 clicks and floated up around off, Khushdil sits down to heave but miscues it badly down to long off for just one more.

47.41

A short ball around off, angling it back in, Haris Rauf does well to hang back and just angle it down to deep third for a single.

47.31

Nicely bowled! Pace-off again, a bit full and around off, Khushdil swings hard across the line but gets it off the cue end of the bat towards cover for a single.

47.22

Ouch, that must have hurt! Full and straight now, Khushdil leans on and punches it straight back at Harshit. The bowler can't get out of the way and the ball stings the fingers before going down to long on and the batters hustle back for two runs.

Pakistan meanwhile have been pushed to the brink and the reigning champions are in serious danger of bowing out even before their final group game.

OUT! BOWLED'EM! How's he pulled that off? Abrar Ahmed with a bamboozling delivery that has taken everyone by surprise. Abrar tosses this one up at around 88 clicks and drifts it on a nagging length onto middle and leg. Shubman Gill presses back and looks to play down the line off the back foot but the ball grips and rips away past the outside edge and knocks over the top of off. It needed a special delivery to get rid of Gill and he now departs for 46 (52). Can Pakistan now build on this?

17.20

Bowled nice and full around middle, Shubman Gill watchfully defends it out.

17.11

Good length on middle, skidding on, Gill rocks right back and works it around the corner for one. The 100 is also up for India.

DRINKS. Well, boundaries have dried up since the last four overs, but the momentum still remains with India as Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill both have adjusted to milk singles. Pakistan need wickets, that too, in clusters to turn the tide. Spin has been deployed in tandem, but it has been dealt with some ease by the two. This partnership has grown to 68 runs off just 72 balls, so the pace of scoring has been decent so far. Pakistan desperately need to break this partnership as it just might open the gates for them. In the meanwhile, Shubman Gill called up the physio and was helped with some stretching exercises during the break. All good to continue now. Abrar Ahmed to resume with the ball.

OUT!

OUT!

48.50

Banged in on a hard length around middle and leg, Khushdil makes room and hammers it flat and on the bounce to long on for just a single.

Oh, deary me! Khushdil Shah denies the run thinking just the single is on and wants to keep strike but they could have well got a couple of runs there, so, that's a bit sloppy. Fuller in length and angled into the pads, Rauf flicks it nicely and to the right of Shubman Gill at deep square leg.

47.51

A loud shout for LBW but the umpire remains unmoved! Ravindra Jadeja looks interested but he gets no support from KL Rahul behind the stumps and India do not take the review. Fired in, on a length, on middle and leg, Saud walks a bit too far across his stumps to help it away. He misses as he gets beaten on the inside edge and gets rapped on the front pad. This was bowled from around the wicket and the ball seemed to have pitched outside leg. Well, well, the Ball Tracking later shows that the ball did pitch in line of the stumps but the ball was clipping the leg stump and it would have been umpire's call.

DRINKS BREAK! Whatever momentum Pakistan got in the first eight overs or so through Babar Azam's intent-laden knock, has been pulled back by India with those two quick wickets. There are not many demons on the pitch, but the Indian pacers have bowled on disciplined lines and lengths, of course, barring those early extras. It is a rebuilding phase for Pakistan, but they need to ensure that they do not go into a shell and play a lot of dot deliveries, and would like to keep the scorecard ticking with ones and twos, at least. Barring Jadeja, India has used almost all its bowling cards, using Axar and Kuldeep a bit early as well. A slight halt in the play as Mohammad Shami has now signalled to the dressing room. The physio is out to have a look and it seems Shami is struggling with his fitness a bit and his pace has been down in the late 120s kph and early 130s. However, it all seems just a strain rather than an injury and he is good to continue.

With the anthems done, it is time for the action to commence. There are more blue shirts in the stands, but despite being outnumbered, Pakistan fans will make their presence felt. India are in a huddle near the ropes with Virat Kohli leading the pep talk. The Men in Blue take their positions, followed closely by the two Pakistani openers. With Fakhar Zaman unavailable, Babar Azam has a new opening partner in Imam-ul-Haq. Mohammad Shami will kickstart proceedings for India. A slip in place. Shami to Imam first up. Here we go!

We are inching closer to the first ball of this heavyweight clash. The stadium isn't packed just yet, but it won’t be long before every seat is taken. Right then, Rohit Sharma and Mohammad Rizwan lead their respective sides out for the national anthems. It will be India's national anthem first, followed by that of Pakistan.

The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma says that it doesn't really matter now what they wanted to do. Mentions that this wicket looks similar to what they played on in the last game and need to bowl well. Adds that the guys in the batting lineup are experienced and this is a great opportunity to do what they do best and give their best as a team. Mentions that the run chase wasn't easy last time around but they powered through it and informs that they are playing with the same team.

The captain of Pakistan, Mohammad Rizwan says that it is a good wicket and it doesn't matter how it plays, they just want to post a good total. Says every match is important in the ICC events and hopes that the boys do well this time. Adds they are aware of the conditions and mentions about them having a good record at this venue. Says it is a new day and whatever happened in the last game is in the past. He informs about the one change. Fakhar Zaman is out and Imam-ul-Haq comes in.

India (Unchanged Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Mohammad Shami, Kuldeep Yadav.

Pakistan (Playing XI) - Imam-ul-Haq (In for Fakhar Zaman), Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan (C/WK), Tayyab Tahir, Salman Agha, Khushdil Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Abrar Ahmed.

TOSS - Rohit Sharma calls 'heads' but it comes down as tails. Pakistan have elected to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Ian Bishop and Sunil Gavaskar are inspecting the pitch. Bishop starts and says that it is a fresh pitch and the overhead conditions are a bit warmer. Informs that it is 70 meters square on either side with 81 meters straight hit. Sunil Gavaskar joins him and expects the pitch to be on the slower side. Expects something similar to what was witnessed in the game between India and Bangladesh. Says there was a hint of turn for the wrist spinners but the finger spinners got assistance as well. Says whichever team bowls well will be able to contain the runs. Mentions that this is the pitch where six-hitting is not that easy and the score around 270 will be a defendable one here.

No matter how much either camp tries to downplay it as just another game, the reality is far from it. Given the history and stakes involved, this is undeniably a high-pressure encounter. Will the situation bring out the best in the defending champions and tournament hosts, Pakistan? Or will India make it two wins out of two and take a big step towards the semifinals? Buckle up, this one promises to be a cracker!

As for India, their win against Bangladesh wasn't convincing but having already played in Dubai, they hold a slight edge. The pitches on the square are unlikely to be too different, and with conditions expected to be slow and low, Rohit Sharma's men might have a better read on how to adapt. India’s dominance over Pakistan in ICC events is well documented, but interestingly, the Men in Green hold the edge in their Champions Trophy encounters, leading the head-to-head with three wins to two.

Not that Pakistan need a reminder, but the tournament tagline 'All on the line' perfectly sums up their situation. After a defeat to New Zealand on the opening night, Mohammad Rizwan and Co. have it all to do. Pakistan have a history of springing surprises in ICC events - either when backed into a corner or when least expected to falter. This time, it's the former, and it all comes down to which version of Pakistan shows up today.

Hello, everyone! The stage is set for a mouthwatering Group A clash on a blockbuster Sunday as arch-rivals India and Pakistan go head-to-head at the Dubai International Stadium. Last night in Lahore, Australia and England delivered an entertaining clash, with the reigning ODI World Cup champions pulling off a stunning chase. Now, it's time for two Asian powerhouses to take centre stage in a contest that promises fireworks!

... MATCH DAY ...

Rivalries in cricket, like in any sport, create electrifying moments that keep fans on the edge of their seats. While the Ashes stand as the oldest and one of the fiercest rivalries between traditional cricketing nations, there exist other matchups that command equal fervor as they occur only during prestigious ICC Tournaments and the Asia Cup. When we speak of certain rivalries, they encompass the collective passion of more than one and a half billion people, stretching far beyond geographical boundaries. Yes, this time of the year has arrived, bringing with it that match of the year, that momentous occasion for which the magnificent Dubai International Cricket Stadium stands ready to erupt with excitement. It’s India vs Pakistan in Match 5 of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Both teams enter this Group A clash riding on contrasting results from their opening matches. Pakistan faced a humbling defeat against New Zealand whereas India dominated their counterparts, Bangladesh. In a compact tournament like this, one defeat is enough to peg one team back and Pakistan’s tournament is on the line as they fly to Dubai to face their biggest rivals. Once considered as their fiercest weapon, Pakistan’s pace attack has given underwhelming returns, not only in the previous game but since quite a while now. The likes of Shaheen, Rauf, and Naseem pose express pace, but their sharpness seems to have gone brittle. And with just one frontline spinner in Abrar Ahmed, their spin bowling will be on the radar as to how they fare in slow conditions in Dubai. But their worries do not end here. Their batting unit has struck a huge blow with Fakhar Zaman, their premier opening batter being ruled out due to an injury. Imam-ul-Haq, another southpaw, has been named as his replacement and might be slotted as an opener. Also, a lot has been talked and discussed about the form of Babar Azam and their overall approach towards the format with the bat. With the middle order not inducing the required momentum, including Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan has a lot to ponder. India stride into their next challenge with momentum, despite a closer-than-expected battle against Bangladesh. Mohammad Shami's roaring return with a five-fer has filled Bumrah's shoes admirably, while young Harshit Rana shows promising signs of adapting to international cricket's intensity. While Arshdeep Singh waits in the wings, along with a good bench strength including Varun Chakaravarthy and Washington Sundar as potential spinners, their bowling arsenal packs a serious punch. The batting lineup exudes confidence with Rohit Sharma finding his rhythm. Virat Kohli, too is building ominously and will be up against an opposition he absolutely loves to score, with an admirable average of 50 plus in the ODIs. Shubman Gill has been consistent and is crafting runs with the willow, fortifying the top order. With KL Rahul, being the first choice ahead of Pant, he has anchored the middle order alongside Shreyas Iyer, backed by the versatile Hardik-Jadeja combination, which makes India's batting depth look formidable. Yet eyes will be on how they do around the middle overs with the ball. In the previous game, against Bangladesh, they were a bit sloppy on the field as well, and couldn't strike a single wicket in the middle-over phase. Can the spinners provide crucial breakthroughs in that vital period to ease pressure at the death? As Dubai's pitches keep tiring up and slowing down, this strategic element could prove decisive for team combinations. India went with three proper spinners and is likely to stick with the same attack. For Pakistan, they have only one frontline spinner in Abrar Ahmed, with Khushdil Shah and Salman Agha providing support as part-timers. And it remains to be seen how they tackle the slowish conditions of Dubai with this trio, as they do not have other spin options in their squad. Four consecutive ODI victories for India against Pakistan in their last five meets, and the burning memory of 2017's Champions Trophy final defeat set the stage for an epic encounter. While history and form favor India, Pakistan has defeated India twice in Dubai which makes them tough contenders. Shaheen vs Rohit has always been a battle to watch out for with the new ball, while Virat Kohli has blown hot and cold against wrist spin, and so has Babar Azam. So, a plenty of contests within contests to watch out for. As these giants of Asian cricket prepare for battle, Dubai braces for another classic in this storied rivalry. Let the desert storm begin.
