Commentary
Welcome back for England's reply. Ravi Shastri informs us that Sanju Samson won't be taking the field, with Dhruv Jurel stepping in as a substitute wicketkeeper. Samson sustained a blow to his right index finger while batting, off the bowling of Jofra Archer, and as a result, he will sit out the second innings. Phil Salt and Ben Duckett walk out to open the innings. Mohammed Shami will start with the new ball. A slip in place. Here we go!
... THE RUN CHASE ...
The total of 247 is the highest T20 score at this venue with 230 being the highest successful chase at this venue. Interestingly, it was England who chased it down during the famous last-over thriller against South Africa in the 2016 T20 World Cup. While this chase is certainly challenging, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility. We could very well witness something extraordinary in the second innings, far beyond what we've seen in the first. Back in a bit for the chase.
Earlier, after being put into bat, Sanju Samson once again fell to a short ball, continuing his struggles in the series. However, that was the only success England had in the Powerplay. Abhishek Sharma, on the other hand, took full control, sending the ball to all corners of the park and delivering a rollicking start. He reached his fifty in just 17 balls, becoming the second-fastest Indian to do so and then raced to his century in just 37 balls, setting the second-fastest T20I hundred between two full member nations. At the death, he managed to provide the flourish before perishing.
A strong finish in the last couple of overs will allow England to take some momentum into the chase. Just 10 runs came off the final two overs, meaning India have fallen short of the 250 mark. When a team posts a total of 247 in a T20 match, it's rare to say they could have scored more, but in this case, it's true. From overs 9 to 16, only two overs went for double digits, and that was largely thanks to England's efforts to keep Abhishek Sharma off strike. The introduction of Brydon Carse also played a key role in this phase, as he was effective in chipping away at the wickets at the other end.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! Overton finishes strongly in the final over! Just concedes a boundary and seven runs overall. This is full from Overton and the line of attack is around off, Ravi Bishnoi clears his front leg out of the way of the ball and goes airborne. He slogs it aerially over the leg side, but loses his shape and ends up getting it off the toe-end of the bat. Gets the height but not the distance and it sails over the deep mid-wicket region. Brydone Carse from deep mid-wicket runs in, locks his eyes on the ball and takes a good catch. India finish their innings on 247/9.
Ravi Bishnoi walks out to bat.
OUT! RUN OUT! On a fuller length, around middle and leg, Axar Patel whips it to deep mid-wicket and straightaway calls for the second run. Runs the first one very hard as the ball rolls to the deep. Liam Livingstone picks and throws in a motion as Axar hares back to the batting end. But the throw is released very flat and accurately to the keeper. Axar Patel puts in a dive but Phil Salt is quick enough to collect and whip the bails off. Axar walks back to the dugout.
Pitched right up, around off and fuller, Axar Patel shovels it out to the cover region. No single taken.
FOUR! Nice shot! A half-volley offered around off, Axar Patel creates some room for himself and hits it over covers for a boundary.
A pinpoint yorker from Overton, on middle, Axar carves it out back to the bowler.
A low full toss on middle, Axar Patel hits it along the ground to the left of long on for a couple of runs.
Who will bowl the final over? It will be Jamie Overton. 2-0-41-0 so far for Jamie.

Another dot to end the over! Only 3 from it! At 147.5 kph, Wood targets the blockhole, on middle and leg, Mohammed Shami clears his front leg and smashes it to long off. He is halfway through for a single but is denied by Axar.
Play and a miss! Skids through from a back of a length, outside off, Mohammed Shami misses to ramp it up.
Hard length, angling on the pads, Axar Patel works towards deep mid-wicket for a single.
An appeal for LBW from Wood, but not given! Spears a good-length delivery, on middle and leg, Mohammed Shami stays put and tries to whip it across but misses. The ball deflects off the front pad and rolls to the backward point region. They cross for a leg bye.
Cannons in a toe-crushing yorker on the pads does Wood, at 153.8 kph, Mohammed Shami is late to jam his bat down and it whistles past the leg stump.
Length-delivery around leg, Axar clips it towards deep square leg for a single.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! An inning to remember for a lifetime from Abhishek Sharma! The Wankhede Stadium rises and acknowledges the left-hander as he walks back on a swashbuckling 135 (54). The English players too, run toward him and appreciate his knock. Coming to the delivery, another googly from Adil Rashid, full and tossed up on off, Abhishek Sharma tries to go aerially, inside-out over cover but mistimes it and ends up offering a simple catch to Jofra Archer at deep cover.
SIX! Thank you, says Abhishek! Number 13 for the left-hander! Adil provides a lot of loop on it and dishes out a googly, full and on middle, Abhishek Sharma reads it well and tonks it over the bowler's head for a cracking six.
Not too full, around off, Axar Patel hits it to deep cover for a single.
On middle, Abhishek Sharma walks down the pitch and flicks it to deep mid-wicket for a single.
WIDE! Keeps it outside leg again, tries to spin it back into the batter with a wrong'un but it doesn't spin much. Wide called.
WIDE! Flat and quick, but down leg. Left alone.
SIX! Goes the distance, again! Adil drops a genuine freebie, a half-volley on the middle, Abhishek Sharma takes a decent stride forward and smashes it straight down the ground for a massive 90-meter six.
Sees Abhishek stepping down the track, Rashid sprays it really wide outside off to keep it away from the batter's reach. Abhishek reaches for it and hits it over cover for a couple of runs.

Good length, around off, Abhishek flat-bats it down to widish long on for a single.
Commentary
They say when in Mumbai, you will be entertained for sure. And that's exactly what happened this evening. While the match ended up as a one-sided affair, the spectators were entertained with 24 towering sixes, and the hosts lit up the stadium with a remarkable bowling dominance. That is a wrap then! India has clinched this 5-match series by 4-1 as this T20I series concludes here in Mumbai, but worry not, as the two teams will now prepare for a thrilling 3-match ODI series which will prove to be the dress rehearsal for the approaching Champions Trophy later this month. That series will cover the cities of Nagpur, Cuttack, and Ahmedabad respectively. The first ODI will be played at the famous Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur and the first ball will bowled at 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT) on Thursday, 6th February. Till then, cheers and take care!

The Presentation Ceremony...
Shivam Dube is in for a chat. He says that it feels great when you contribute as an all-rounder to the team. Mentions that he was excited to bowl after missing out in the previous game. Adds that he enjoyed bowling on this wicket. Shares that he just wanted to keep the momentum going when he went in to bat. Tells that he has been working with Morne Morkel on using the angles while bowling.
Earlier in the game, Jos Buttler once again invited India to set the target at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, only to witness the Abhishek Sharma show - a masterclass in aggressive batting that lit up Mumbai's skyline with a barrage of sixes. The young left-hander blazed his way to a breathtaking century off just 37 deliveries, spearheading India's score to a massive 247 runs. While England's bowling appeared one-dimensional, Sharma's bat spoke multiple languages, finding boundaries at will and ease. Shivam Dube and Tilak Varma also joined the six-hitting bandwagon, though wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Amidst the onslaught, Brydon Carse emerged as England's saving grace, his clever variations provided breakthroughs when his teammates struggled to find answers. He picked up a three-fer while Wood picked two to his name.
The writing was pretty much on the wall as the tourists lost too many quick wickets, with their premier range hitters dismissed as well. It was that kind of a day for Abhishek Sharma where whatever he touched, turned into gold. He continued to rule the evening as he struck the first ball as well and went on to pick up the double whammy. What started as a good start from England, ended up in one-way traffic as they fell like a pack of cards from 68/3, and got bundled up on a paltry 97 runs.
In the quest to go bang bang, England did show intent but kept losing wickets against the spinners as Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi dented the English top order swiftly. It however looked like Salt was batting on a different track and smashed the fastest fifty in T20Is by any English batter against India in T20Is, taking just 21 deliveries to do so. The ploy to bring in Shivam Dube into the attack played well for the hosts as he dismissed the only well-set batter in Phil Salt on his very first delivery.
With a mountainous target to chase, England had no option other than to come out all guns blazing. It was Phil Salt who provided a strong start for England as he found regular boundaries. However, England lost too many wickets from the other end inside the Powerplay, including the skipper. Salt though continued his merry way and England raced to 68 in the Powerplay, but they did lose three wickets in the process.
So good with bat, and so good with the ball as well. India have bamboozled England, restricting them below three figures. Another dramatic collapse became England's nemesis as they were in a decent position at 68/3 at the end of the Powerplay, but things went absolutely downhill for them after that, losing seven wickets in just 29 runs. A victory by a 150-odd run is indeed a massive one for any side and this young Indian team has done the job with perfection.
OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Two in two for Mohammed Shami to wrap up the game! On a back of a length, around leg, Mark Wood hops and tries to tickle it fine but misses. Dhruv Jurel moves to his left to take the catch. He goes up in an appeal straight away as does Shami but the umpire remains unmoved. Suryakumar Yadav takes the review. The UltraEdge shows a spike when the ball is next to the glove. All over for England. India win by a massive margin of 150 runs and end the series with a 4-1 scoreline!
Mark Wood is the last man in.
OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! Shami gets his second and India are just one wicket away from a dominating win! Shami bangs it short into the surface, on the stumps, Adil Rashid attempts for a pull shot to go aerial but the ball gets big on him as it takes off the surface. Adil swings through and mistimes it. Top-edges it over the keeper and Dhruv Jurel settles under it to take a regulation grab behind the sticks.
Short and on top of middle, Jofra Archer smashes the pull shot and hits it flatly to deep mid-wicket. The fielder from the deep runs in a few yards and the ball just lands ahead of him on the bounce. A single taken.

FOUR! Hammered! This is on a back of a length, outside off, Adil Rashid stands tall and frees his arms to flat bat it back over the bowler's head for a boundary.

Serves it full, in the channel on off, Adil Rashid camps back and guides it towards backward point.
On a back of a length, on off, Adil Rashid hangs back and defends.
DRINKS BREAK! Well, what started as a strong start for England has now turned into a procession of wickets at the Wankhede. This typically happens in mountainous run chases like this - either the chasing side goes bang bang and gives a tough fight, or just collapses quickly. Here, the latter has happened and the visitors have been badly dented by the Indian bowlers. Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi set the tone for India with the ball and Abhishek Sharma along with Shivam Dube too, chipped in with wickets to their name. The writing is on the wall now and it is now just about how long it takes India to wrap things up quickly and get these two remaining wickets.
OUT! DRAGGED ON! Another one bites the dust! On a nagging length, on off, Jacob Bethell goes deep in the crease and has a hack across the line. The ball skids through to catch the inside edge and pegs the leg stump back. Dube strikes on the first ball for the second over in a row. England lose their last recognised batter in the form of Bethell.

Abhishek gives the ball air and bowls it outside off, on the fuller side, Jamie Overton backs away to go inside out but ends up giving himself too much room. He has to reach out to meet the ball and it gets skied over extra cover. Suryakumar Yadav turns around and goes after it. Stretches his hands out in front to snaffle it. Abhishek Sharma gets his second wicket and England are 7 wickets down now.

OUT! CAUGHT! Abhishek Sharma can do no wrong tonight! Not the best of balls by Abhishek, a half-tracker, on off, there to be put away, Brydon Carse presses on the back foot quickly and flat bats it down the ground. Hits it hard but fails to get the elevation and get it wide enough from the long on fielder. Varun Chakravarthy on the fence runs to his left and takes a sharp catch around his chest. For the 3rd over in a row, England have lost a wicket on the 1st ball. They are 87/6 now.

Salt gets to his fifty off 21 balls - the fastest fifty for an English batter in T20Is against India.

Jacob Bethell is in at number 6 for England.
OUT! STRAIGHT UP AND TAKEN! Varun Chakravarthy strikes on the first ball for the second over in a row! The move to go with Varun for another over has paid off for India. Murali Karthik on air informs that Axar Patel was walking towards his mark but then Suryakumar Yadav had a change of mind, stopped Axar and decided to go with Varun. Coming to the delivery, this is the googly, on a nagging length, on middle, Liam Livingstone gets down for the slog sweep but a bit of extra bounce results in the ball going straight up and only as far as deep mid-wicket where Rinku Singh takes the skier.

SIX! Two in two from Abhishek but this is even better! Archer changes his length as he goes full, on middle, Abhishek Sharma skips down the track and gets under the ball to tonk it over cover for six more. Another expensive over from Archer. 16 runs off the first over and 18 from this one.
SIX! Dispatched! Jofra Archer errs as he offers width on off, on a shortish length, Abhishek Sharma frees his arms and gets on top of the bounce to slap it over point for a six.
No timing but Abhishek gets away with it! Fuller in length, on off, Abhishek Sharma looks to go back over the bowler's head. The bat turns in his hand and it goes straight up but it evades the backtracking Jos Buttler at mid off. Two runs taken.
Archer responds by pulling the length back and the line is tighter as well, around the left shoulder, Abhishek Sharma arches back and tries to ramp it over the keeper but misses.
FOUR! Hit with real authority! On a nagging length, on middle, Abhishek Sharma puts the dancing shoes on and stays leg side of the ball to pump it over cover for a boundary.
Angling in, at the stumps, on a good length, Abhishek Sharma hangs back and stabs it down on the off side.

Tilak Varma walks out to bat at number 3.
OUT! TAKEN! Sanju Samson falls to the short ball once again! Holes out to deep square leg for the second game in a row and Jofra Archer is again involved in his dismissal, this time with a catch. Wood stays over the wicket and dishes out a short ball, at the batter, Sanju Samson is tucked up for room and is unable to get his hands through the shot. Does not get any elevation and hits it flat and straight to deep square leg where Jofra Archer takes a safe catch around his waist. Sanju Samson tosses the bat in the air wearing a wry smile on his face and walks back to the dugout on 16 (7).
In the channel on off, on a length, Abhishek Sharma opens the bat face and guides it to deep backward point for a single.
At 153.3 kph, angling away, on a good length, Abhishek Sharma tries to muscle it through the off side but miscues it off the inner half of the bat to the right of deep square leg for another brace.
Wood digs it in short, at the left shoulder of the batter, Abhishek Sharma is a bit hurried on the pull and he fails to ride the bounce. Gets enough bat on it to clear the man at mid-wicket for a couple of runs.
Charges in from over the wicket and nails the wide yorker to the left-hander, Abhishek Sharma reaches out and opens the bat face to use the pace but misses.
Mark Wood with his express pace is ready to steam in from the far end.

FOUR! Up and over! Into the wicket again, outside off, Sanju Samson gets the width he needs and he throws his hands at it. He is airborne while playing the shot as he hops. Flays it over short third for a boundary. End of an eventful first over.
SIX! Not quite from the middle of the bat but Samson will take it! Archer bends his back and bangs in a bumper, over off, Sanju Samson stays on the back foot and takes the short ball. Gets it high on the bat as he swivels for the pull but he manages to clear the deep backward square leg fence.
An optimistic shout for LBW! Archer dishes a full delivery, outside off, Sanju Samson goes deep in the crease and shuffles across again. Has a swipe across the line but gets beaten on the inside edge. The ball strikes him on the back leg well outside the line of the off stump.
Samson has taken a blow on his finger and the physio is out to check him up. A bandage is being wrapped around his right index finger. Looks alright to continue now. But that must have stung him hard.
This kicks up a bit and nips back in, on a short of a good length, on middle, Sanju Samson moves across his stumps but gets cramped up for room. Tries to fend it down and wears it on the glove. Samson takes his glove off and checks the index finger of his right hand before calling the physio.
Swing and a miss! At 142.5 kph, on a hard length, on off, this skids through, Sanju Samson backs away this time and slashes but fails to connect.
SIX! BANG! No sighters needed for Sanju Samson! Jofra Archer steams in from over the wicket and digs it in short, around off, Sanju Samson stays deep in the crease and walks across the stumps. Nails the pull flat and to the left of deep square leg for a six.
Well then, we are all set for the action to begin in Mumbai! As always, it's box-office housefull at the Wankhede with the crowd buzzing and cheering. The umpires and the players now make their way out to the middle. The English players take their respective fielding positions. Out walks the Indian opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Featuring in the fifth T20I game on the bounce in the series, Jofra Archer has the new ball and is all in readiness to kick off the proceedings for England. Samson to face. The umpire calls 'Let's Play' and here we go...
The Indian skipper, Suryakumar Yadav says that they wanted to bat first. Mentions that the wicket looks good for batting and with a little bit of breeze around, he hopes that there will be no dew. Expects a packed house and he wants the players to raise their hands and step up to take responsibility. Informs that Mohammed Shami comes in for Arshdeep Singh.
The captain of England, Jos Buttler says they have played some good cricket in patches and want to grab those special moments in the game. Adds that the vibe in the team is good and also mentions that it is one of the great venues with a fantastic crowd and atmosphere. Observes that it is a good wicket and he informs that Mark Wood comes in the side. Cheekily mentions that they have four impact subs.
England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt (WK), Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler (C), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton, Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood (In for Saqib Mahmood).
India (Playing XI) - Sanju Samson (WK), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Shami (In for Arshdeep Singh), Varun Chakravarthy.
TOSS - England have won the toss and they will BOWL first.
PITCH REPORT - Nick Knight and Murali Kartik are near the deck. Kartik points out that the boundary count is quite high, with square boundaries measuring 64 and 63 meters, while the straight boundaries stretch to 71 meters. Adds that the pitch is made of red soil. Knight notes that near the crease, the surface is dry with visible cracks. Mentions that as you move down the wicket, there's a bit of grass, and it looks quite compact. Reckons that there will be help for the pacers due to the grass covering.
India have won their last three T20Is at the Wankhede Stadium. As for the toss dynamics, the 2024 Indian T20 League produced an even split - of the six night games, three were won by teams batting first and three by teams chasing. So, there's not much to dissect in terms of a clear advantage. Stick around for the toss and team news.
As for India, their dominance in T20Is at home remains unshaken, with their last series loss coming against Australia in February 2019. On his homecoming as Indian captain for the first time, Suryakumar Yadav will be eager to put on a show. Shivam Dube, subbed out due to concussion in the previous match, may sit out this game, with Ramandeep Singh a possible replacement. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami could feature tonight, getting a few overs under his belt before the rigours of the upcoming ODI series.
England have largely retained the same squad for the upcoming ODI series, with Joe Root being the only addition. The visitors will be eager to head to Nagpur with momentum on their side. Rehan Ahmed remains the only member of the touring party yet to feature in the series and could get a look-in here. England are also known for managing Jofra Archer's workload carefully, so after four consecutive appearances, he could be rested with little to gain from this final T20I.
Hello and a warm welcome, folks! The entourage has now moved to Mumbai for the fifth and final T20I of the series. With India holding an unassailable 3-1 lead, the outcome of the series has already been decided. With not much riding on this game, especially with the next T20 World Cup still a long way away, both teams will aim to finish strong.
... MATCH DAY ...
A journey that began from the City of Joy now winds its way to the City of Dreams, where the majestic Wankhede Stadium awaits the final chapter of this T20I saga between India and England. While joy remains firmly with the hosts who've clinched the series 3-1, victory remains but a distant dream for the touring side. Though some might call this fifth T20I a dead rubber, try telling that to Mumbai's passionate cricket faithful who'll pack every corner of this historic venue. The Divecha Pavilion, Garware Pavilion, Vijay Merchant Stand, and Sachin Tendulkar Stand - each section of this cricketing colosseum promises to erupt with thunderous applause for every boundary struck and wicket taken. Such is the magic of Wankhede, where even a series finale becomes a celebration of the sport itself. Also, England would rather be happy to end the series with 3-2 result rather than a 4-1, hence, they indeed still have a lot of pride to play for. After facing a tough defeat in Rajkot, India again bounced back in Pune to win the fourth match, but make no mistake, the Men In Blue have been thoroughly challenged and interrogated by the Englishmen throughout the series. It has well and truly been the competition between India’s spin arsenal versus England’s thunderous pace quad. While India has clinched the series, concerns loom over their inconsistent opening partnership, primarily due to Sanju Samson's lackluster performance. His early exits during the powerplay have left India yet to achieve a fifty-run opening stand throughout the series. Adding to the worries is skipper Suryakumar Yadav's staggering dip in form, with a dismal eleven innings passing since his last fifty-plus score. While the others have covered these lapses, India would definitely like these to be nursed out. On the bowling front, Varun Chakravarthy has maintained his excellent form, consistently taking wickets with good backing from Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel. However, controversy has emerged in cricket circles regarding India's decision to bring in Harshit Rana as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube, with the opposing team questioning whether this was truly a like-for-like replacement. A lot of opinions have stirred in, some in support and some in objection. While Jos Buttler and Ben Duckett have been the reliable anchors, their batting lineup has seen different heroes emerge at crucial moments. Yet, a recurring nemesis haunts the English camp - their mid-innings collapse against spin bowling. This Achilles' heel struck again in Pune, where victory was within touching distance before their innings unraveled in familiar fashion. What should have been a comfortable chase turned into a procession of batters walking back to the pavilion, their ambitions undone by a mix of rash shot selection. The English pace attack has been firing on all cylinders, highlighted by Saqib Mahmood's devastating spell that tore through India's top order, claiming three vital wickets. Adil Rashid has been equally impressive, weaving his magic with masterful spin bowling. After featuring in four straight matches, Jofra Archer might make way for Mark Wood as part of England's rotation policy. With the series result already settled, India too could use this opportunity to test their bench strength, giving chances to players waiting for their turn. The Wankhede Stadium awaits what promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Now then, Suryakumar Yadav gets the trophy from the dignitaries and walks to his teammates who await their skipper at the winner's board. SKY hands over the trophy to the youngsters of the team and the entire Indian squad poses for commemorative photographs.

India's Abhishek Sharma is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his glittering century along with two wickets with the ball. He collects the trophy and is up for a chat. He begins by saying that it was a special innings for him as it came for the country. Adds that when he feels it is his day, he always tries to go hard from the first ball. Appreciates the coach and the skipper for backing his skills and allowing him to play with freedom. Mentions that when the opponent bowlers are clocking above 140 kph constantly, you need to prepare well against them and be ready a little earlier and just react to the ball.

Miscued but safe! Dube digs it in short, at the batter, Adil Rashid is a bit rushed on the pull and is unable to complete the swing of his bat. Mishits it towards mid off but manages to clear Hardik Pandya. Two runs taken.
FOUR! Hammered! This is on a back of a length, outside off, Adil Rashid stands tall and frees his arms to flat bat it back over the bowler's head for a boundary.
On a good length, attacking the stumps, Adil Rashid spanks it on the bounce to mid on.

Floated up, full and on off, Jofra Archer eases the drive to cover.
Jofra Archer is in at number 9.
OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! 50th catch in T20I cricket for Suryakumar Yadav. England are going down in a hurry.
Fired in, full and on off, pushed down to long off for another single.
Floated up, full and at the stumps, Jamie Overton skips down the track and lofts it back over the bowler's head for a single.
Slower and shorter, on off, Jamie Overton pushes it in front of cover and wants a single but gets sent back by Jacob.
