Commentary

Right then, that is it from this game and hosts India have taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series and can seal the series in the next game. England on the other hand will be much more confident with how they played in this game and would want to get the next win and make the series interesting. The 3rd T20I will be played in Rajkot on Tuesday, the 28th of January and will begin at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT) but you can join us an hour in advance for the build-up as well. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Tilak Varma is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning knock. Varma starts by saying that the wicket was slightly two-paced and wickets were falling at the other end but remembered what the coach told him and he tried to play according to the situation. Adds that the team has decided that the left-hand right-hand combination is the way to go at the top in order to keep the bowlers guessing. Mentions that he faced very quick pacers in South Africa where the ball was coming on much quicker and that's why he was able to play the English pacers. Ends by applauding Ravi Bishnoi and the two crucial boundaries he hit.

Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper of India says England bowled very well and is happy to have gotten over the line. Adds that they have been playing with an extra batter for the past few series which gives them a good cushion and allows some aggressive brand of cricket but also mentions how the team adapts to situations like in this game. Appreciates Tilak Varma's knock and also says Ravi Bishnoi puts a lot of effort during the practice and wants to contribute with both bat and ball. Lauds Arshadeep Singh as well. States that the atmosphere in the dugout is very calm and they will keep trying to play this brand of cricket.

Jos Buttler, the captain of England says that it was a great game and it was an exciting ending and gives credit to Tilak for getting India over the line. Adds that it was good to push India and reckons that they did well to end to a nearly defendable score. Mentions that there were a lot of positives and goes on to mention debutant Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse for the way they played. Adds that the Indian spinners are always going to take wickets which he doesn't mind as long as they are getting hit as well.

The presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Suryakumar Yadav put England into bat first and just like the first T20I, it was Arshdeep Singh who git rid of Phil Salt with a short delivery early on. And just like the previous game, it was Jos Buttler who looked England's best batter and played some eye-catching shots. The Indian spinners did make a mark in the innings as well and Varun Chakravarthy picked up a couple of big wickets and so did Axar Patel. As for England debutant Jamie Smith showed good promise and so did Brydon Carse who then got run out at a crucial juncture as England huffed and puffed to 165 runs. In reply, we got a cliffhanger of a game but it was Tilak Varma and his calm head that was the difference between the two teams.

Ravi Bishnoi is down for a quick chat. He says when he went out to bat they decided to keep things simple and not take any unnecessary risks. Mentions that with a slip in place, he knew Livingstone would look to try and get him out so he took the chance and found the boundary. Appreciates the way Tilak batted and says he is consistently performing well and is up to something big going ahead.

England will be disappointed in the end and will think that they had this one in the bag more than once in that run chase. Jofra Archer and Mark Wood bowled a fiery spell up top and picked up a couple of wickets but Archer leaked a few too many boundaries and it was then the likes of Brydon Carse and Adil Rashid who stepped up in the middle overs and got England into a position of promise. Rashid dropped Sundar's catch as well which did cost England about 15 or so runs and then Archer's final over went for plenty, putting the visitors on the back foot again. They fought well and took it deep but just couldn't get rid of Varma nor could they stop the tailenders from getting those streaky boundaries and will now have to win 3 on the bounce to seal a comeback series win.

Needing 166 runs for victory, India got out of the blocks quickly again but their openers were undone by some serious pace bowling. Tilak Varma though kept the ante up in the Powerplay and even Suryakumar Yadav got a few boundaries away before getting out. India though were pegged back soon as they went from 58/2 to 78/5 and needed a partnership of some sorts. It was the local boy, Washington Sundar who lended a hand to Varma and the pair got the hosts back in front before the tables turned yet again. India lost wickets in a heap but Varma kept his cool and thanks to a few boundaries got away by Arshdeep Singh and then Ravi Bishnoi, Varma managed to steer his side over the line.

What a finish to the game and Tilak Varma blasts off in celebration and rightly so. The game ebbed and flowed one way then the other but in the end, it is India who have managed to get over the line right at the death and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. But spare a thought for England, they made a match out of this one and were even ahead at one stage but simply couldn't hang on.

19.24

FOUR! Tilak Varma takes India home! Jamie Overton lands it full and on off, Tilak Varma crunches his drive through covers and finds the fence. Takes off for a celebratory sprint and acknowledges the cheer from the crowd and his team. With this 2 wickets victory, India take a 2-0 lead in the series.

19.12

Great effort from Liam Livingstone to save a couple of runs for his side. This is pitching full and on leg, Tilak Varma flicks it well wide of deep backward square leg and Livingstone moves across at lightning speed, puts in a dive with an outstretched right hand and makes a fantastic stop. The batters take two runs.

Who will bowl the final over? India are just a big hit away from victory and it will be Jamie Overton who will try and defend 5 runs for England who will have an extra fielder inside the ring due to the slow over rate.

Commentary

We are back with India's reply! The umpires are out in the middle and are followed by the English players who spread across the field to take their positions. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, the Indian openers stride out to a huge cheer from Chepauk. Jofra Archer has the new ball in hand and will start the proceedings. Away we go!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the conditions look promising for batting with minimal dew on the ground, giving India plenty of confidence as they gear up to chase this target. The pitch remains favourable, but England won’t go down without a fight. With a defendable total on the board and a hint of momentum from their tail towards the end, they’ll be banking on Adil Rashid to deliver a match-turning spell. All signs point to a thrilling conclusion to this game, so stay tuned as India’s reply is set to unfold shortly!

Axar Patel is down for a quick chat. He says that the spinners are being played keeping the track in mind but also the opposition. Adds that they have more pacers in their ranks but with Hardik Pandya being able to bowl with the new ball, it gives them the luxury to play three spinners. Reckons that the target should be chasable as it is a 180-185 sort of a wicket and if the bowlers miss their mark, it is very easy to hit them away.

Even as Buttler stood firm, anchoring the innings with his fluent stroke play, Axar Patel delivered the game-changing moment, dismissing him agonizingly short of a well-deserved half-century. England’s debutant Jamie Smith along with Brydon Carse offered a glimmer of hope, attacking with flair and finding the boundaries. Yet, England’s all-too-familiar struggle with losing wickets at crucial junctures ultimately proved costly, preventing them from building a formidable total.

Just as it seemed like England might seize control, India’s local spin duo stepped in to flip the script. Washington Sundar made the crucial breakthrough by dismissing Ben Duckett, and Varun Chakravarthy followed suit, dismantling Harry Brook’s stumps to halt England’s momentum as India clawed their way back into the game.

Choosing to bowl first, India couldn’t have scripted a better start. Arshdeep Singh struck like lightning in the opening over, sending Phil Salt packing. But England’s captain, Jos Buttler, had other ideas. Walking in with confidence, he lit up the field with a blistering counterattack, peppering the boundaries and leaving Indian bowlers scrambling for answers.

Some crucial late-order runs from England’s tail added a flicker of resistance, but it was India who once again asserted their dominance with a masterful bowling display, restricting the visitors to an underwhelming 165/9. The spinners were nothing short of sensational, spinning a web of deception that dismantled England’s batting lineup and firmly tipped the scales in India’s favour heading into the break.

Drinks break! India’s spinners are weaving their magic, and with the crucial dismissal of Jos Buttler, England finds themselves in deep trouble. Liam Livingstone now holds the key and will need to shoulder the responsibility of steadying the innings while aiming to bat till the end. India, on the other hand, will look to maintain their stranglehold, applying pressure and chipping away at the rest of the batting lineup to tighten their grip on the game. Also, India have been issued two warnings for starting their overs late. If they delay again, they risk being penalized with a 5-run penalty. Debutant Jamie Smith comes in to bat next for England.

All in readiness for the game to begin! The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of India who have four representatives in the recently announced T20I Team of the Year, 2024 with two of them playing in this series as well. It will be Ben Duckett and Phil Salt who was the only English player in that team of the year to open the innings this evening. And, the ICC T20I Player of the Year, Arshdeep Singh will start off proceedings with the new ball. Let's play...

England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt (WK), Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler (C), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Smith (On debut and in for Jacob Bethell), Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse (in for Gus Atkinson), Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

India (Playing XI) - Sanju Samson (WK), Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Dhruv Jurel (in for Rinku Singh), Washington Sundar (in for Nitish Kumar Reddy), Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy.

Jos Butler, the skipper of England says they would have looked to bowl first had they won the toss but will now look to bat well and seize the new opportunity. Mentions that they will have to look to play a bit more aggressively and do better in all departments. Says they will need to assess the conditions quickly and mentions that Jamie Smith will make his debut replacing Jacob Bethell who is unwell and Brydon Carse comes in for Gus Atkinson.

Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of India says that they will bowl first and it looks like a good track and they saw some dew while practicing the previous night. Adds that they want to stick to the basics and have the same approach as the last game. Reckons that the fielding department is something that they have been focusing on a bit more and that aspect brings the whole team closer. Informs that Nitish Kumar Reddy is ruled out of the series and Rinku Singh will miss a couple of games as well and says that local boy Washington Sundar is in and so is Dhruv Jurel.

TOSS - India win the coin flip and they have decided to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Deepdas Gupta is pitchside. He says that T20I cricket is back at the venue after 7 years and says it is a bigger venue and the boundary straight down the ground is over 75 meters. Nick Knight joins him and says that there are a few cracks and there's a good covering of grass, dead grass that is and reckons that we might see 180 being scored here and it might help the spinners a bit but not much.

JUST IN - Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out of the series after sustaining a side strain, while Rinku Singh, who suffered lower-back spasms during fielding in the previous game, will be unavailable for the next two matches. To cover for their absence, Shivam Dube and Ramandeep Singh have been called up to the squad.

For England, the challenge lies in overcoming their struggles against spin, a storyline that will undoubtedly take centre stage at Chepauk. Jos Buttler’s exceptional form since his return to the squad remains a bright spot, and once again, he’ll be pivotal in leading from the front. A strong start at the top and an aggressive approach will be crucial for England to counter India’s attack effectively. Adil Rashid will play a pivotal role on a surface likely to aid turn, while Jofra Archer’s pace could be the X-factor they need to keep India in check. While the scales may tip in India’s favour heading into the game, England have more than what it takes to deliver a statement performance and level it all up. Fair to expect an electrifying contest! The Toss and team news to follow.

India delivered a near-flawless performance in the first match, with contributions from all departments ensuring a comprehensive win. With the passionate crowd behind them at Chepauk, the team will be brimming with confidence. Local hero Varun Chakravarthy, who was impressive in the opening game, will relish the spin-friendly conditions and look to trouble England's batters even more. While Mohammed Shami's comeback into the side remains to be seen, it is sure that his inclusion will add firepower to an already strong bowling attack. With such good depth and strength, India will back themselves to secure another dominant win.

Hello and a warm welcome to the second T20I of this 5-match series, where India takes on England at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After a commanding victory in the opening game, India will look to maintain their momentum and extend their lead, while England will be eager to bounce back, aiming to level the series in what promises to be an exciting encounter.

... MATCH DAY ...

India vs England! A Clash of Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai! Get ready for another explosive encounter as India and England face off in the second T20I of the five-match series. After a resounding victory in the first match, India will be eager to maintain their momentum and extend their lead. England, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back and level the series. The hosts showcased their strength in the first match, with both bat and ball. Their aggressive batting approach and disciplined bowling proved too much for England. On the other hand, the visitors struggled to cope with the Indian bowling attack, especially against the spinners. Jos Buttler's lone hand wasn't enough to prevent a comprehensive defeat. With the caravan now shifting to Chennai, India will be confident of making it 2-0 as there will be much more assistance for the spinners than it did in Kolkata and England will have to quickly adjust and find a way to score against the Indian spinners. Talking a bit more about the teams, England were hopeful of getting a big score on a pretty flat pitch at the Eden Gardens but apart from Jos Buttler no one really managed to get going and that formidable batting lineup was made to look pretty average by the Indian spinners and even their pacers couldn't do much in the chase but they way Jofra Archer bowled is surely a big positive for them. Moving on to India, they opted to play just one frontline pacer in the form of Arshdeep Singh and he bowled beautifully at the start, allowing the likes of Varun Chakravarthy to then come in and rule the middle overs. With the bat, Sanju Samson got another fast start but it was Abhishek Sharma who hammered 79 runs off just 34 balls as India finished off the run chase with plenty of time to spare. It will be interesting to see when and if Mohammed Shami gets a game under his belt given that he is returning from a prolonged injury and is a part of India's initial Champions Trophy squad. India are the favorites to win the second match, given their current form and the expected conditions in Chennai. However, England are a formidable opponent and will be eager to prove their mettle. Don't miss this thrilling encounter as India and England battle it out for supremacy in the T20I series!
