Commentary

Right then, that is it from England's white-ball tour of India and the hosts have showed their prowess, both in the T20I series and the ODI series. England did have some positives and will be looking for a few tweaks as both teams now gear up for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy that begins a week from now. For now, you can switch tabs and catch our coverage of the Pakistan Tri-Series, where Pakistan are chasing 353 runs against South Africa in a do-or-die clash with the winner going on to face New Zealand in the Final. Cheers!

Next up, Rohit Sharma goes on to collect the series-winning trophy from ICC Chairman, Jay Shah before heading towards his teammates to celebrate. The trophy is then handed to the three-debutants in this series for India and the trio of Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy and Yashasvi Jaiswal lift the trophy and the whole team poses for the photograph.

Rohit Sharma, the victorious skipper of India says he is very pleased with how the team faced the challenges coming into the series. On his dismissal, he says there was nothing much he could do about it and sometimes the credit has to go to the bowlers who are always looking to get wickets. States that there are very few areas they need to fix but they as a team know what it takes to move ahead as a unit and all the players know what is expected of them and on the basis of skills, they were almost on point. On the score India achieved, he says there was no specific target in mind and he was happy to have reached that total and the batters had the freedom to go out and express like they did in the previous World Cup.

Shubman Gill is the Player of the Match for his impressive stellar hundred and he is also the Player of the Series. He says that he was feeling good and this is one of the best series for him in his career so far. The wicket was a bit tricky earlier in the inning but he is satisfied with the result as they have won the game in the end. Mentions that the chat with Virat Kohli was about the bowlers, who were bowling well, and how the pitch was playing. They both just rotated the strike and cashed on the bad balls for boundaries and chatted about how they didn't lose many wickets in the powerplay and then carried on that momentum. He says that he doesn’t think much in the middle and just reacts on each and every ball as per the merit.

Jos Buttler, the skipper of England says this game panned out more like how the entire tour came through for them but mentions that they were outplayed by a solid team. Adds that they haven't been able to execute the style of cricket they want to put forth and there have been some individual performances that have stood out. Appreciates the way Shubman Gill played and says they had to play really well to chase that big total but they couldn't make the most of starts. States that the challenge against a tough side like India who have plenty of variations is big but they couldn't get through.

The Presentation ceremony...

Shreyas Iyer is up for a quick chat. He says that in the first game, he wanted to take the momentum back to his side as they had lost two consecutive wickets, and from there on, the bowlers have been brilliant so far. Adds that he has picked up the line and lengths so well in this series and has scored runs right from the start, he has backed his instincts. Mentions it was unfortunate that he got run out in the second game but today, again he got the opportunity to go in the middle and play as he wanted to because Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill have laid a great platform for him. Mentions that it was a good series for him, but he wishes, he could have got a hundred. Says that he was working in the domestic games when he got a break and he got some time to work on his technique to play the short balls in a good way. Further says that taking singles on those short balls was more satisfying to him than just pulling those for boundaries only. Talks about the fielding as a unit, and says they are trying to deliver the needed breakthroughs for their team and he is happy that they have come off well. He is keeping his fingers crossed to get the best award for the fielder. Concludes that he is excited about the upcoming Champions Trophy and preparing well.

Earlier in the game, it was yet again Jos Buttler who won the toss and this time, he asked India to bat first. The English pacers backed this decision and got Rohit Sharma out pretty early on and kept things tight in the first 10 overs. However, Shubman Gill looked in sublime touch as he generally does at this venue and even Virat Kohli managed to get a good outing in with a half-century. Gill went on to notch up his 7th ODI ton and added century stands along with Kohli and also Shreyas Iyer which set the platform for a big total. Adil Rashid was the wrecker-in-chief with the ball for England as he got all the big batters out and helped England get back a bit of momentum. KL Rahul played a handy cameo towards the end before Mark Wood came back in and finished things off decently with the ball but India did get over the 350-run mark. In reply, England wasted a fine start and it was yet again a case of batters not quite willing to play the long game and eventually, India won the game by a huge margin of 142 runs.

The English middle order had an uphill task and the onus was on Harry Brook to end the tour on a positive note, and he did start off decently but Harshit Rana came in and picked up both Brook and the dangerous Jos Buttler to get India in a commanding position. Soon enough, England were 175 for 8. With not much to lose, the English tail went hard at the bowlers but it was just Gus Atkinson who managed to deal some damage as he made a fine 38 off just 19 balls before Axar Patel cleaned him up and sealed the deal for India.

The phase after the first Powerplay, a.k.a., after the first 10 overs was always going to be crucial. Tom Banton and Joe Root showed some promise by finding the boundaries against the spinners but did find it difficult to rotate the strike and pretty quickly, both set batters fell to the spinners, leaving England in a bit of bother and India were able to put on the squeeze.

Chasing 357 runs was always going to be a tough task for a side that hasn't clicked together as a batting unit on this tour but the openers got England off to a flier and gave them half an opportunity to actually make a match of this one. They added 60 runs in just over 6 overs before Ben Duckett got out, with Phil Salt following suit not much later. It was Arshdeep Singh who provided a double breakthrough and got India back in the game.

DONE AND DUSTED! India have swept away the three-match ODI series following up their 4-1 victory in the T20I series and have done so in style. England on the other hand, end this tour with just one victory to their name to go along with a fair few big losses as well which is not quite what they would have wanted given the Champions Trophy is on the horizon. This is also the 12th series clean sweep for India since 2011, more than any other national side.

34.2W

OUT! BOWLED'EM! Axar Patel wraps things up on his return and India seal the series 3-0 winning this game by a mammoth 142 runs. Comes from wider on the crease from around the wicket angle and lands it on a fuller length, coming into off, slower through the air as well. Gus Atkinson makes some room to power it through the off side but is beaten and the ball shatters the off-stump off the ground. A solid cameo from Gus Atkinson ends at 38 (19) and England are skittled out for just 214 runs.

34.10

Comes back into the attack and fires it in at the stumps, Gus Atkinson miscues his drive straight back to the bowler.

KL Rahul collects the ball to his right and whips the bails off in a flash. The third umpire is summoned to check for the foot but Wood has his back show in the crease.

31.44

FOUR! They are absolutely having fun out in the middle. Short and around off, Mark Wood slaps it through cover-point for a boundary. The third one off the over.

Commentary

We are back with England's reply! The two umpires are out in the middle and are followed by the Indian players who spread across the field. Phil Salt is joined by Ben Duckett who was seen hobbling in the field earlier to open the innings for England. Arshdeep Singh has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Here we go.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

England’s bowlers apart from Adil Rashid and Mark Wood struggled. They failed to create pressure, allowing partnerships to settle in with ease. The seamers didn’t mix up their deliveries with slower balls or hard-length deliveries, making things easier for the batters in the middle overs. Rashid was the only bowler who looked threatening, picking up four crucial wickets and keeping India in check. Now, the big question is, will India whitewash England 3-0, or will England fight back and grab a confidence-boosting win ahead of the Champions Trophy? The answer lies in the second innings. With dew expected to settle in, chasing will become much easier for England, and they have an added advantage as Varun Chakravarthy who troubled them a lot so far isn’t playing today. Don’t go anywhere as the chase is about to begin!

Adil Rashid of England is in for a chat. He says it's hard to single out his best wicket of the game but says all the wickets are very important against a quality side. Mentions that he works hard and tries to get more revs on the ball which works at times and sometimes doesn't reap the rewards. Adds that the track looked a tad bit on the slower side and they will have to see how it pans out later but will go out with a mindset of chasing it down.

Shreyas Iyer walked in at number four and played attacking shots from the start. He built a solid partnership with Gill, helping India go past the 200-run mark at a run rate of over six. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill brought up his seventh ODI century, continuing his excellent form in this series. But just after reaching the milestone, he too got outfoxed by Adil Rashid’s brilliance. Iyer also reached his fifty at a good strike rate but was dismissed in an unlucky fashion, caught behind down the leg side, leaving India with two new batters in the middle. KL Rahul, who didn’t get much time in the middle in the previous two matches, finally had the chance to settle in and played a crucial role with his quick-fire knock. However, India once again lacked an explosive finisher in the last 10 overs who could accelerate with big sixes. As a result, they fell short by 20-30 runs of what could have been a massive total.

India didn’t have the best start after being sent in to bat first, as they lost their skipper, the centurion Rohit Sharma from the last match for a cheap score. However, back-to-back century partnerships helped them post this competitive total. First, Virat Kohli and vice-captain Shubman Gill steadied the innings, displaying pure class as they capitalized on loose deliveries and rotated the strike efficiently. Their partnership crossed the 100-run mark, with both maintaining a strike rate of around 100. England’s ploy of Joe Root getting some overs after the Powerplay 1 didn’t work out as he was taken for a few boundaries. Just when fans started hoping for a Kohli’s century as he was looking in good form today, Adil Rashid dashed those dreams with a brilliant leg-break that got rid of him in quite a similar fashion to the last match. Despite Kohli’s dismissal, India didn’t slow down as they used to in such situations.

India have finished with a good total of 356 being bowled out, but is this enough on what seems like a flat pitch where dew is expected to come in later? We’ll soon find out, but India will surely be disappointed for not getting at least 380 runs which was well on course. India scored just 81 runs in the last ten overs and lost six wickets which can come back to haunt them later. At one point, they looked all set to go past that score, but one man changed the momentum, Adil Rashid. He struck at crucial moments, derailed the momentum of India on four occasions with big wickets, and dented the score quite a bit. If not for him, India would have posted an even bigger total. Rashid has been outstanding throughout this tour in both the T20I and ODI series, troubling the Indian batters, especially Virat Kohli.

OUT! RUN OUT! Nonchalantly done by Phil Salt from behind the stumps and out of nowhere, India have been bowled out here. Mark Wood bowls it seam-up and on a hard length around off, this one angles in a bit around the top of off. Arshdeep Singh stays leg side of the ball and looks to go over covers but misses. Singh just has a look to try for the single and wanders out of his crease but Salt under-arms the ball onto the stumps and it will be a run out. India finish with 356 runs on the board!

49.52

Good running! Hard length over middle, Arshdeep Singh forces the ball through mid on and into the deep before picking up a couple of runs.

Kuldeep Yadav is the last batter in for India.

OUT! CAUGHT! Another one bites the dust and England just gathering a bit of positive momentum heading into the innings break. Mark Wood keeps the pace in the early 130s and bangs it into the deck over middle, Washington Sundar just looks to loft it over long on but doesn't get any timing on it. The ball sails down to long on where Harry Brook pouches it safely.

49.20

Slower again, but full and wide this time from Wood, Washington Sundar goes chasing after it and gets a big inside edge back to the keeper.

OUT! CAUGHT! A bit of a silver lining right at the end for Gus Atkinson but Harshit Rana has done his job here. Atkinson goes hard into the pitch and quick too this time, bowling it outside off. Rana backs away to go big again but ends up slicing it up and towards the cover region. Jos Buttler takes a simple catch and India are now 353/8 with one over remaining.

48.51

Slower and bowled into the pitch, angling it across off, Washington Sundar pulls it down in front of mid-wicket for one.

48.21

Short ball, aimed it at the rib cage, Sundar looks to pull but miscues it just wide of short fine leg for a single.

48.14

Around the wicket to the left-hander, bowled into the deck and a bit slower again over off, Sundar stands tall and miscues the pull down to long on for a run.

OUT!

Bowls this slower through the air and full, around middle and leg, dipping right in front of Hardik Pandya who lunges to block. Drinks break! After a shaky start with the bat, India have come alive here and the pair of Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill is regularly finding the fence as well. England did bowl immaculate lines and lengths early on but have now started to get a bit sluggish with the ball. Adil Rashid almost picked up Kohli in his first over and the next few overs will be crucial for both sides and England will be hoping that Rashid weaves his magic and picks up a few wickets. Liam Livingstone is now introduced into the attack.

NOT OUT! A huge shout for LBW, but is turned down by the umpire. After a long chat with Phil Salt and Adil Rashid, skipper Buttler decides to send it upstairs. Adil Rashid tosses it up, around middle and leg and gets the ball to turn away just a bit. Virat Kohli takes a huge stride out to block but gets beaten on the inside edge and gets hit on the pad. The pitching is what could save Kohli! Time for UltraEdge which shows no spike as the ball goes past the bat. The Ball Tracking now loads up and the pitch is outside leg. The onfield call of NOT OUT stays and a huge roar erupts across the stadium as Kohli survives but it wasn't a bad review from England!

A confident appeal for LBW from Adil Rashid but the umpire turns it down. Jos Buttler has a long discussion with the bowler and the keeper and opts for the review eventually. UltraEdge builds up first and shows that the ball beat the inside edge and Ball Tracking goes on to show the ball as 'pitching outside leg' and the onfield decision of NOT OUT stands.

All in readiness for the game to begin! The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of England. It will be the pairing of skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill to open the innings for India. Both sets of players also wearing green arm-bands, showing their support for the Organ Donation initiative set up by BCCI today. It will be Saqib Mahmood who will start proceedings with the ball. A couple of slips in play, lets go...

Rohit Sharma, the Skipper of India, says that he wanted to bat first as he would like to put runs on the board because they have chased a couple of times already in the series. Adds that he enjoyed his time in the middle in the last match and it was important for him and a win was needed for the team. Mentions that the fielding has been brilliant throughout the series every individual is working hard on the field. Mentions that there is a lot of young blood in the squad that just wants to go out and put everything on the line. Says that the team expects good performances from the debutants and though they are pretty new to this level, they have skills and he doesn't want to put them under a lot of pressure. Informs that they have made a few changes with Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami being rested while Varun Chakravarthy has had a calf strain which is why he misses out and Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Arshdeep Singh coming in.

Jos Buttler, the captain of England says that they will bowl first. Adds that there might be some dew and they have already batted first twice, so, want to try chasing before the Champions Trophy. Mentions that they have got into some good positions but need individuals to make full use of the situation. Reckons that the surface looks decent and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Ends by informing that Tom Banton is coming in to replace Jamie Overton.

England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt (WK), Ben Duckett, Tom Banton (in for Jamie Overton), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (C), Liam Livingstone, Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Saqib Mahmood.

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Washington Sundar (in for Ravindra Jadeja), Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav (in for Varun Chakravarthy), Arshdeep Singh (in for Mohammed Shami).

TOSS - Jos Buttler wins the coin flip and England will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta and Graeme Swann are in the middle for the pitch analysis. Deep starts by saying that the centre pitch is being used for this game and it's a 66-meter boundary on either side with 74 meters straight down which is not that long. Swann joins in and says the pitch will play similarly to the 23' World Cup final where India struggled but still will be a good pitch. Says the pitch isn't too hard and there are a few cracks which always offer something for the bowlers. Concludes that the batters will have to settle in to make the most of it. Deep says the captain winning the toss would want to bowl first.

On the other hand, England’s struggles in ODIs continue. Despite flashes of brilliance, they have faltered at crucial moments, failing to capitalize when it matters most. A win here would not only be a huge morale booster but also provide much-needed confidence before heading to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. Their batting unit has been promising in patches, but a lack of big innings and partnerships has cost them dearly. Meanwhile, their pacers have been off the mark, unable to make the kind of impact they are known for. England will be desperate to end the series on a high note, salvage some pride, and take positive momentum into the tournament ahead. With the toss and team updates just moments away, stay tuned for all the action from Ahmedabad.

For India, this venue brings back bittersweet memories - it was here that they suffered heartbreak in the 2023 World Cup final. But far from dwelling on the past, the Men in Blue have been phenomenal against England, sealing the series in commanding fashion. Now, they have their sights set on a perfect 3-0 sweep to carry winning momentum into the global tournament. Rohit Sharma's return to form in the previous game was a huge boost, and all eyes will now be on Virat Kohli as he looks to rediscover his magic touch. India’s spinners have been dictating terms all season, and with the Champions Trophy squad now confirmed, this match presents a golden opportunity to fine-tune strategies and give key players more game time.

Hello and a warm welcome to the final match of England’s tour of India! The stage is set for the third and final ODI at the colossal Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where India, having already clinched the series 2-0, will look to complete a dominant whitewash ahead of the much-anticipated Champions Trophy just days away and England will fight to salvage some pride.

... MATCH DAY ...

The stage is set at the magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for the series finale - a perfect dress rehearsal before the Champions Trophy kicks off next week. With India already pocketing the series 2-0 after dominant displays in Nagpur and Cuttack, they're hunting for a clean sweep to maintain their winning momentum. The series has been far from just a practice run, serving up plenty of fireworks! The biggest highlight has been Rohit Sharma finally breaking his dry spell with a scintillating century, silencing critics and sending Indian fans into a frenzy. While Team India's batting unit has been clicking in perfect harmony, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli, who's yet to unleash his magic in this series. With Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal fighting for the spot at the top with the skipper, the headache remains at the helm of the management as of whom will they go up with. Will Shubman be shuffled to number 3? If yes, what would be the next batting order and who goes out? But that’s for the team and selectors to decide. On the bowling front though, India would be looking forward to control the run flow. Mohammed Shami hasn’t looked at his best and understandably so as he has just returned from a serious injury. Though Harshit Rana had covered those lapses and has looked brilliant so far, proving himself as a potent pace bowling option. It’s been spin dominance throughout with Varun Chakravarthy and Ravindra Jadeja spelling their magic wizardry with the ball. England's batting unit has shown sparks of brilliance, with Phil Salt and Ben Duckett finding their groove while skipper Jos Buttler chips in with valuable contributions. Add the ever-reliable Joe Root to the mix, and their batting card looks formidable on paper. However, the story so far has been one of promising starts but unfulfilled potential - the classic case of ‘so near, yet so far’. The English batters have been getting their eye in, but they've struggled to convert those solid 60s and 70s into match-winning centuries. In the ODI format, where big scores often make the difference, these missed opportunities have come back to haunt them. The bowling department tells a similar tale of mixed fortunes. While spin wizard Adil Rashid has maintained his magical touch, the pace battery has been a double-edged sword. The express pace trio of Archer, Wood, and Atkinson has set the speed guns blazing but has also leaked runs at crucial junctures. More concerning is their inability to clean up the Indian batting lineup in both matches. With a bowling arsenal that most teams would envy, England will be desperate for their pacers to find the perfect balance between pace and precision in this final showdown. Can they finally convert potential into performance at the mighty Narendra Modi Stadium? The series has already delivered on its promise of being the perfect Champions Trophy prelude. Will India complete the whitewash, or will England stage a comeback?
