Commentary
We are back for India's reply. Jos Buttler and Co. head out to the centre. Rohit Sharma walks out to open the innings alongside the debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jofra Archer will start with the new ball for the visitors. Two slips in place. Archer to Jaiswal first up. Here we go!
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Right then, India will be the happier of the two sides at the halfway mark. The English openers found it easy to hit through the line against the new ball, but whether it moves around under lights remains to be seen. Similarly, Harshit Rana pointed out that the wicket is a bit two-paced, so it will be interesting to see if batting gets easier under the lights. Plenty to watch out for in the chase. India's chase coming up shortly!
Harshit Rana is up for a quick chat. He says he has worked hard for this debut and he is living his dream life. Adds that he is feeling great. Mentions that he was looking to bowl at a certain length and got rewarded for it. Tells that the English batters were looking to make room so he talked to Rohit Sharma and looked to keep it on the stumps from there on. Further mentions that it is a double-paced wicket and the odd ball keeps low and some kick off. Adds that the bowlers started well then bounced back later on. Says that it is a good total and they are confident in chasing it down.
Jos could not build on his half-century while Jacob Bethell looked scratchy at the start but grew in confidence as his innings progressed. He too fell immediately after scoring his fifty, and the tail was left exposed. Jofra Archer struck a few lusty blows, but eventually, England were bowled out for 248 with 14 balls left unused. For India, Harshit Rana was taken to the cleaners early on by Salt but he roared back with a double strike and finished with three wickets on his debut. In the spin department, Ravindra Jadeja was miserly as always with figures of 3 for 26 from 9 overs, including a maiden.
After opting to bat, Phil Salt went on the offensive against the debutant, Harshit Rana, and got England off to a flyer. A mix-up led to Salt's downfall as the tourists slipped from 75/0 to 77/3 in 8 balls. The English skipper Jos Buttler led the rebuild for his side and knew what the situation demanded of him. Root fell after a start, but Jos continued on his merry way by knocking the spinners around in the middle phase.
A job well done by India! While there’s plenty of joy in the Indian camp, England will be left disappointed, especially after their blistering start, racing to 71/0 in just 8 overs. A recurring pattern of the innings was that whenever England began to build a partnership, India struck to halt their momentum, often following up with another wicket to keep the visitors in check.
OUT! STUMPED! Kuldeep Yadav gets a wicket and wraps the English inning for 248 runs. Flights the wrong'un around off on a fuller length and tempts the batter to go after it. Saqib Mahmood skips way down the track looking to heave it across the line and gets beaten comprehensively as the ball turns away to go past the outside edge. KL Rahul collects it with ease to his right and knocks the bails off with Saqib Mahmood almost halfway down the track.
Tossed up, on off, Jofra Archer looks to swipe across but miscues it to deep square leg for one.
FOUR! Great shot this! Adding gold to the scoreboard is Archer. Short and on middle, Jofra Archer sweeps it in front of square on the leg side and gets a boundary.
Comes back to bowl his final over and serves it full, on off, Saqib Mahmood hits it straight down the track to long off and picks up a single. More importantly gets Archer back on strike.

Bowls it on a nagging length, straight at the stumps, Adil Rashid plants his front leg out and looks to sweep it across but plays all over it. The ball bounces a bit and goes past his bat to hit the top of middle. England are 241/9 now.
Floated a bit, full and on off, Adil Rashid pushes it back to the bowler.
Jadeja digs it short and on off, quicker as well, Archer slaps it to long on and rotates the strike over.

Commentary
Right then, that brings an end to this relatively one-sided contest, with India securing a commanding victory to take a 1-0 lead in this three-match ODI series. The action now shifts to Cuttack, where the second ODI will be played at the Barabati Stadium on Sunday, 9th February 2025. The first ball is set to be bowled at 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT), and our build-up will begin well in advance, so make sure to tune in early. Until then, it's cheers and goodbye!
Shubman Gill is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning knock of 87 runs. Says that there was a bit in it for the pacers, so it was important for him to show the intent and avoid playing on the back foot. Tells that Iyer is a batter who takes the game on and it was a good decision from him to counterattack. Shares that the pull shot he played through mid-wicket was his favourite shot of the innings. Adds that it was a bit two-paced wicket and this was a wicket where the slower you bowl, the more turn you would get. Mentions that he looked to play shots square of the wicket and not play down the ground since some balls were stopping a bit. Further says that it is a good learning experience for him as a vice-captain.
Rohit Sharma, the victorious skipper of India says they are very happy and they came into this format after a long gap and wanted to start well. Mentions the way they came back after being put under pressure by the English openers and adds that with this being a slightly longer format they need to believe and put performances to pull things back. Appreciates the efforts in the field and the way the bowlers chipped in. On Axar Patel's knock he says, he has proved time and again and that they specifically wanted a left-hander in the middle and his partnership with Gill was superb. Says that overall as a team, he wants them to do the basics right and tick every box there is to be ticked. Feels that they should have avoided losing wickets towards the end.
Jos Buttler, the skipper of England says that they are disappointed with the loss, especially after the kind of start they got. Adds that they were short of another 40-50 runs which could prove to be crucial. Mentions that they will have to keep hold of the momentum for larger periods which they haven't been able to do thus far. Says that they had their moments early with the ball but couldn't find more wickets and appreciates the way the Indians batted. Concludes that they will now look to play better and execute well and try to capitalize on the momentum that comes their way.
It's time for the Presentation Ceremony ...
Axar Patel is in for a quick chat. He says he knew he would get promoted up the order well in advance to have that right-left combination going. On the way Indian bowlers came back, he mentions that the quicker balls were coming nicely onto the bat and they wanted to vary some pace and he wanted to keep it tight on the stumps. Further adds that there was enough assistance in the pitch for the spinners and they wanted to keep it tight and force the batters to make mistakes. On his partnership with Gill, he says they had a chat about taking it slowly and then targeting bowlers and taking the game deep because it would be difficult for the new batters to come in and play their strokes straightaway.
Earlier in the game, England came out all guns blazing, with Phil Salt and Ben Duckett launching a fiery assault on debutant Harshit Rana, propelling their side to a rapid 75/0. Just when it seemed like a one-way traffic, India roared back in stunning fashion, striking not once, but thrice in the space of just eight balls to shift the momentum. Jos Buttler looked in fine touch, anchoring the innings, while Jacob Bethell, despite looking a bit unsettled, contributed valuable runs. Both batters reached well-deserved half-centuries, but India’s disciplined bowling ensured that England never truly ran away with the game. Harshit Rana bounced back brilliantly from his expensive start, finishing with three wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja worked his magic in the middle overs, also claiming three crucial scalps. In the end, England were bundled out for just 248 in under 48 overs, as India’s bowlers kept the pressure on and took wickets at regular intervals.
Gill battled through cramps but never lost his rhythm, while Axar remained composed and fluent at the crease. Both batters registered well-deserved half-centuries, steering India comfortably towards victory. However, just before the finishing line, Adil Rashid managed to sneak one past Axar and soon after dismissed KL Rahul, capping off a respectable outing for himself in an otherwise ordinary English bowling effort. Gill, looking set for a century, fell for 87 while trying to accelerate, allowing a few nerves to creep in. Though not a major concern, India would have preferred a smoother finish without that late stumble. Nevertheless, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja ensured there were no further hiccups, guiding India home with a composed finish.
Sensing the need for a breakthrough, Jos Buttler turned to his spinners, and Jacob Bethell delivered, dismissing Iyer soon after he reached his half-century. However, Axar Patel, promoted up the order, seamlessly adapted to his role and stitched together a composed partnership with vice-captain Shubman Gill. The duo rotated the strike smartly, capitalizing on loose deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking and maintain complete control over the chase.
Defending a modest total, England came out firing, with Jofra Archer asking plenty of tough questions with the new ball and equally supported by Saqib Mahmood. These probing spells at the top gave England the perfect start, which saw the backs of both Indian openers in the space of six balls for just 19 runs, building early pressure. But in walked Shreyas Iyer, who wasted no time in counter-attacking. His aggressive stroke play not only eased the nerves in the Indian camp but also swung the momentum back in their favour, as his quickfire knock propelled India to 71/2 by the end of the first Powerplay.
Not as clinical as India would have hoped for towards the end, but they get the job done with relative ease. They continue their dominance over England following a strong T20I series win and now take a 1-0 lead in the ODIs with a four-wicket victory, sealing the chase with more than 11 overs to spare.
DROPPED, FOUR! Angling away, on a good length, on off, Ravindra Jadeja has a poke at the away-going delivery. Gets a faint outside edge that goes behind towards the keeper. Phil Salt gets his gloves together around his left ankle. But fails to get low enough and the ball clips him on the fingertips and races away for a boundary. Handshakes and smiles all around in the Indian camp as they go 1-0 up in the series!
Nails the yorker, on off, Ravindra Jadeja tries to squeeze it out but misses.
FOUR! Not quite from the middle of the bat but Jadeja will take it! Off-cutter from Mahmood, fuller and outside off, Ravindra Jadeja skips down the track to go back over the bowler's head. He is early into the shot and the bat turns in his hand. Ends up dragging it off the inner half of the bat and gets it through the vacant mid on region for a boundary.
Pushed across the left-hander from over the wicket, on a length, Ravindra Jadeja drives it well and manages it get through the ring of three catching fielders in the cover region. Liam Livingstone gives it a chase and slides to prevent the ball from reaching the fence. Two runs taken.

FOUR AND FIFTY for Axar Patel! His third in ODIs and the first one in India! Having been promoted up the order for a purpose, he has shone through with this fine knock. Carse bowls this on a length, on middle and leg, Axar Patel hits it through the line and just short of mid off to his left for a boundary.
Drinks break! India are on course to take the lead in the series. After a couple of early inroads, not much has gone England's way, with their pacers being predictably way too short. Adil Rashid has been the most threatening in the middle phase, but India have done well to negate that threat. The stand between Shubman Gill and Axar Patel is now worth 107, and these two will be keen to see the team home and not leave it to those left in the shed.
WIDE! Way too short and outside off, Axar Patel premeditates and makes room but the ball is way over his reach.

FOUR! Crunched! Short of a length, way too predictable around off, Shubman Gill rolls his wrists over the ball and nails the pull well in front of square on the leg side for a boundary. This also brings up the 100-run partnership between these two!

Drinks break! The chase began on shaky footing with the early loss of two openers, but the momentum is now firmly in India's favour since the arrival of Shreyas Iyer. Iyer has been ruthless on anything loose, capitalizing on every opportunity. However, England have not helped their cause, with some wayward lines and lengths. Archer, in particular, got carried away, failing to make the new ball count as he would have liked, being guilty of bowling too short. With the introduction of spin from both ends, Jos Buttler will be hoping for some control, and Adil Rashid will be key as the tourists strive to find a way back into the contest.

With the pre-match formalities complete, all eyes now turn to the action ahead! The two umpires make their way to the middle, followed closely by the Indian team, who charge into their positions. Striding out confidently for England are openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett, ready to take on the challenge again. Mohammed Shami stands poised at the top of his mark, raring to go. Let's play says the umpire and here we go!
The match officials step onto the field, accompanied by both captains, as the teams line up with pride for the national anthems. It will be England's national anthem first followed by that of India.
The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma says that they were anyway looking to bowl first. Shares that it is about understanding that it’s not just about what you want to do, but how you execute it. Mentions that the focus is on being aggressive with the ball and adjusting based on what unfolds thereafter. Tells that they had a good break, allowing them some time to reflect. Mentions that this series presents an opportunity to get back into the groove and do what's required. Adds that game time is crucial, especially since they’ve hardly played this format since the World Cup. Informs that Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harshit Rana will be making their debuts and Virat Kohli misses out because he had a right knee injury last night.
Jos Buttler, the skipper of England says that the group is nice and tight and with Joe Root back, it feels like will be a good game. Adds that the morale is high and they as a team have had their moments but will now aim to play well for longer periods. Mentions it's going to be a great test leading to the Champions Trophy and they are going in with 3 seamers and an extra spinning all-rounder.
England (Playing XI) - Ben Duckett, Phil Salt (WK), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (C), Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood.
India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal (On ODI debut), Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana (On ODI debut), Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami.
TOSS - England win the toss and they will BAT first.
PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta is near the deck. He says that traditionally, it's not a high-scoring venue. Shares that the square boundaries measure 68 and 69 metres with the straight hit being 75 metres. Graeme Swann joins him and he says that the pitch is made up of red soil, with a few cracks here and there. Adds that it's a hard deck, with a tiny bit of grass, but not much moisture. Feels that spin could come into play later, especially given the nature of the red soil. Swann says that overall, it's shaping up to be a good cricket pitch for both teams.
JUST IN - Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harshit Rana have been presented with their maiden ODI caps in the Indian huddle. Jaiswal received his cap from captain Rohit Sharma, while Rana was handed his by Mohammed Shami.
As for England, the T20I series didn’t go their way, and their frailties against spin were evident. Joe Root, who will be playing his first ODI since the 2023 World Cup, is undoubtedly the best player against spin in the English setup, and his presence offers a much-needed boost. The tourists have already announced their playing XI, which features a three-pronged pace attack alongside a frontline spinner in Adil Rashid. How the batters fare against the Indian spinners will go a long way in deciding their fortunes in this series. Stick around for the toss and team news!
Since that ODI World Cup final defeat against Australia, India haven’t played much 50-over cricket, featuring in just six ODIs. In Jasprit Bumrah’s absence due to a back issue, Mohammed Shami's role becomes even more crucial in leading the pace attack in his first ODI series since the World Cup. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have endured a lean patch in red-ball cricket over the past few months. Whether a switch in format sparks a change in fortunes for the experienced duo is a question that will be answered over the course of this series.
Hello and a warm welcome, folks! The first leg of England's tour of India is done and dusted, with the T20I series going India's way 4-1. Now, we move on to the more consequential leg of the tour. With the Champions Trophy less than a fortnight away, this three-match series presents a crucial opportunity for both sides to round off their preparations. We kick things off here in Nagpur with the first ODI!
... MATCH DAY ...
The countdown to cricket's elite showdown has begun! With the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner, the spotlight shifts to a riveting three-match ODI series that's more than just another tour. Nagpur, Cuttack, and Ahmedabad set the stage for what promises to be a thrilling dress rehearsal – each match a stepping stone towards cricket's coveted prize. Fresh off a dominant T20I display, Team India now regroups with added firepower as the ODI heavyweights return to the fold. The big guns are back! Rohit Sharma reclaims the captain's mantle, while run-machine Virat Kohli returns to bolster the lineup. Despite their lean run in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit and Virat return to their comfort zone, the 50-over format where they've been nothing short of phenomenal. The batting order packs a punch, with highly talented Shubman Gill fighting for the spot in the top with Yashasvi Jaiswal, while the middle-order fortress stands strong with Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya. Behind the stumps, a strategic battle brews between KL Rahul's technical prowess and Rishabh Pant's left-handed dynamite. In the spin department, Jadeja leads a potent trio, with Axar and Washington providing rich alternatives. The mystery men are back too. Kuldeep Yadav returns after his October layoff, while Varun Chakravarthy rides his recent wave of success. With Jasprit Bumrah available only for the Ahmedabad showdown, pace duties fall to the ever-reliable Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh, with rookie Harshit Rana waiting in the wings. England's ODI fortunes need a desperate revival! Once kings of white-ball cricket, the Three Lions now find themselves surprisingly languishing at seventh in the ICC rankings, a position that hardly befits their pedigree. Their run in this format hasn’t been promising since their dismal World Cup 2023 campaign. They have faced consecutive series defeats against West Indies and Australia. Enter Jos Jos Buttler's brigade, armed with a point to prove and talent to spare. The batting lineup sees the classic touch of Joe Root at his sweet spot of number three, while the explosive duo of Ben Duckett and Phil Salt gear up to set the Powerplay ablaze. The middle-order puzzle presents an intriguing choice between newcomers Jacob Bethell and Jamie Smith, flanked by the proven firepower of Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone. Fresh from their T20I heroics, all-round sensations Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton add depth to both departments. The pace arsenal remains intimidatingly fiery with Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, Saqib Mahmood, and Gus Atkinson forming a quartet that can rattle any batting lineup on their day. And the mystery man, Adil Rashid remains as the spin chief of the squad. After a six-year hiatus, Nagpur's Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium is set to host One Day International cricket once again. For Team India, this marks their first ODI on home turf since the 2023 World Cup, as they look to redeem themselves following their disappointing loss to Sri Lanka last year in an away series. Their track record at home though has been quite stellar, with just one series defeat at home in the last 5 years. As for England, their last ODI series win against India in India came back in 1984, with the second-best performance being carrying out a draw in 2001/02, hence it has been a long wait for the tourists. Will England challenge the Men in Blue this time around? A cracker of a series awaits!
