Tahlia McGrath

All Rounder
Right Handed & Right-arm medium

Hailing from Adelaide, Tahlia McGrath's journey in sport began at an early age. She came through the state’s cricketing pathway from Under-12 level, but as a child her main ambition was actually to play football for Australia’s women’s football team. By the age of 16, she realised her future was brighter in cricket and made the decision to focus completely on it. Her family placed a strong emphasis on education, encouraging her to strike a balance between academics and sport. Staying true to those values, McGrath completed a teaching degree even as she pursued her cricketing career.

McGrath made her domestic debut for South Australia in the Women’s National Cricket League and quickly established herself as a powerful middle-order batter and a steady medium pacer. Her early success in the WNCL and later with the Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League earned her national recognition. She was handed her ODI cap in 2016 against South Africa and made her Test debut the following year in the Women’s Ashes. Having broken into the Australian setup early, McGrath seemed set for a long run, but stress fractures in her back halted her progress and forced her to spend an extended period away from the national side. The road back was arduous, and she had to prove herself all over again in domestic cricket.

Her leadership potential was recognised even before she became a regular in the national side. In 2020, she was one of the players selected for Cricket Australia’s leadership pilot program. The program aimed to prepare future leaders in the women’s game, and McGrath’s inclusion underlined the belief in her ability to take on bigger responsibilities. The defining breakthrough in her career came in 2021 during the Women’s Ashes, where she delivered outstanding performances with both bat and ball. That series firmly established her as a first-choice all-rounder for Australia. She carried that form into the series against India later that year and became a central figure in Australia’s 2022 ODI World Cup triumph in New Zealand. The same year, she played an important role in helping Australia secure gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

McGrath was also instrumental in Australia’s 2023 T20 World Cup win in South Africa. Following the 2023 Women’s Ashes, she made her international captaincy debut when she led Australia in an ODI against Ireland. At the domestic level, McGrath became the cornerstone of the Adelaide Strikers. Taking over the captaincy, she led the team to three consecutive finals in the Women’s Big Bash League from 2021 to 2023, lifting the trophy twice in the latter two seasons.

Her impact extended to franchise cricket globally. She played a key role for UP in the Women’s T20 League in India and represented Southern Brave in The Hundred. In the inaugural WPL season, McGrath impressed with her batting contributions but the following two editions brought a noticeable dip in her returns with the bat. Despite those challenges in franchise cricket, McGrath’s performances for Australia remained steady and impactful and was named as the vice-captain for the 2025 ODI World Cup.
