Nongthombam Biren Singh or N Biren Singh is the current Chief Minister of Manipur. He was a well-known footballer in his young days. He worked as a journalist after retiring from sports until 2002 when he entered politics by joining the regional Democratic Revolutionary People's Party. Singh was elected to the state Legislative Assembly for the first time in 2002 from the Heingang constituency as the party's candidate. The party was merged with Congress ahead of the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and Singh held various posts in the party. Singh left the Congress party and joined the BJP in October 2016. In March 2017, N Biren Singh was sworn in as Manipur's first BJP Chief Minister. The BJP had accomplished a feat in the state by embracing N Biren Singh, who played a vital role in driving out the 15-year-old Congress's rule headed by Okram Ibobi Singh. The four-time MLA from the Heingang Assembly constituency is well-known and has a stronghold in his constituency.
