Konthoujam Govindas had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in August 2021 only a month after he quit the Congress party. He accused the Congress party and the leadership and blamed the "inaccessibility" of Congress High Command for quitting the party. Govindas Konthoujam, a former minister and six-time Congress MLA (1995, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017) from Bishnupur in Manipur, is a notable leader in the northeast. He was also the Congress Legislature Party's main whip. The former Cabinet minister was also appointed president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in December 2020. Govindas established various marketing complexes for handloom and handicraft products while serving as minister of commerce and industries in 2016.
